Alternative Course Evaluation

1. Attendance:
Students are expected to attend all classes. The instructor will grant exceptions under unusual circumstances.
7 classes: 4 points
6 classes: 3 points
5 classes: 2 points
less than 5: 1 point Points: 4 3 2 1

2. Mid - Term Evaluation:
A paper written in class (one hour), that describes how the public schools, where you live or where you work, are supported financially. You must have accurate dollar amounts and you will need a copy of the budget summary in your district (can be obtained from the Superintendents office or the Business Office of the District). You are primarily interested in the sources of the money (state, local and federal) and any specific earmarks, i.e., special education. The paper will address three questions:

  1. How is public education supported in your district? Be specific as to the sources and any specific earmarks. Draw a circular chart to illustrate the main categories.
  2. Describe briefly how the local property tax is determined for a specific piece of property using a specific property value of $100, 000.
  3. Describe briefly the State Foundation Program and how it functions.

3. Three two page papers that address current educational issues:

  • Topic One: "The Supreme Court Decision of 1954 has Produced a Public Education System in the US that is Fair and Equitable for All Its Citizens"
  • Topic Two: "The Funding of Public Education in Texas in Fair and Equitable for All Its Citizens.
  • Topic Three: "Underperforming Students (or failing students whose reading scores are at least one full year below the standard at the end of the fourth grade, should be permitted to transfer to a school of their parents choice at public expense."

4. Final Examination.
Will be distributed on or about 1 November

Final Grade:
A = 23 / 24 points B - = 15 / 16 points
A - = 21 / 22 points C + = 13 / 14 points
B+ = 19 / 20 points C = 10 / 12 points
B = 17 / 18 points C - = 9 points

Below 9 points: Failure

Please Note: The instructor will consider an individual evaluation format that combines both formats if you desire. The proposed format must include the attendance requirement as well as the final examination. This must be submitted to me at the next class meeting.
