Thomas O’Brien
JOHN AND REBECCA MOORES PROFESSOR
O’BRIEN’S RESARCH
INTO THE PAST EARNS ANOTHER HONOR
Thomas O’Brien brings his scholarly knowledge and passion
for Latin American history, culture, politics and labor into the
classroom and onto the pages of five books, numerous articles and
research papers.
O’Brien, who joined UH in 1977, has garnered numerous accolades,
including the Conference on Latin American History Book Prize and
the Robertson Prize for best article in the Hispanic American Historical
Review. Now, he adds another accomplishment — the John and
Rebecca Moores Professor — to his vitae.
One professor wrote in a letter of support, “What makes
his achievement almost singular is the comparable command he brings
to his understanding of U.S. international history, particularly
as it pertains to business and economics.”
The John and Rebecca Moores Professor is a five-year renewable
award given to faculty who are outstanding in teaching, research
and service. The recipient is awarded a $10,000 annual stipend.
