Demetre Economou
EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
‘PIONEER’S’ WORK
NETS RESEARCH AWARD
Engineering professor Demetre Economou’s research has generated
nearly
$7 million in grants, but it’s still a surprise to
him to be one of three recipients of the 2008 Excellence in Research
and Scholarship Award for the rank of professor.
“UH has many top-notch faculty who could have won this award,” Economou
said.
Described by one colleague as a “pioneer” in his field,
Economou has spent his 22 years at UH studying how gas-discharge
plasmas work. His results have been used for microchip manufacturing,
plasma television panels and lasers.
The Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award is given to faculty
members who have achieved a substantial record of outstanding research,
scholarship or creative activities in their field. The award carries
a $5,000 stipend and a plaque.
