Houston is the fourth largest city in the country and third-largest visual arts center outside of New York City and Los Angeles. It is a city with world-class cultural institutions. The University of Houston has the largest theatre department in the city and offers the only dance degree program in Houston. 80 percent of the university's music graduates remain in this area, so the Moores School of Music provides a major infusion of superbly trained musicians into professional performance organizations, churches, public and private schools, and studios—indeed, into every aspect of the city's musical life.
Our graduates and undergraduates gain invaluable experience as interns in area arts organizations and alternative spaces, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Contemporary Arts Museum, DiverseWorks Artspace, Lawndale Art Center, the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston Center for Photography, Fotofest International, and in commercial galleries throughout Houston. Blaffer Art Museum offers university students from all disciplines an opportunity to study contemporary art and encourages undergraduates and graduate students to develop programs in collaboration with museum staff.
