UEP Program Overview

The primary goal of the Urban Experience Program (UEP) is to serve the needs of the individual students. This includes three major parts:

  1. To provide students with the academic tools and personal skills necessary for student success and responsible citizenship.
  2. To promote the Tier One mission of the University of Houston in meeting the challenges of educating a dynamic mix of nontraditional and traditional students.
  3. To support the values of the University mission by building an environment that is inclusive, positive, and accessible where all participants feel welcome.

Grant Program Overview

The Urban Experience Program follows the guidelines of the state of Texas Higher Education plan, entitled “Closing the Gaps by 2015”. This publication of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) emphasis Participation, Success, Academic Excellence and Research to achieve the impressive educational goals of the State of Texas. In accordance with THECB, the Urban Experience Program promotes Student Success, Educational Equity, Civic Responsibility, and Excellence in Leadership Values. To further these goals, the UEP provides financial assistance to students who participate in the UEP. This award is designed to improve the retention rate of the University of Houston and increase the number of successful UH graduates. The UEP is divided into two categories:

  1. The program provides awards to students that have demonstrated a persistence in their academic studies (Encouragement).
  2. The program also provides awards for students that have persevered in their academic studies (Empowerment).

Grant Eligibility

  • Be currently enrolled at University of Houston Main Campus.
  • Be an active UEP member (only active students are eligible for participation in the UEP grant program).
  • The amount that you may receive from the Encouragement & Empowerment Grant program is a maximum of $2,000.

Criteria for Encourage Award

  • Full-time student taking at least 9 credit hours in the 2017 spring semester.
  • Both merit and financial need will be considered.
  • GPA of 3.00 or higher
  • Demonstrate leadership potential
  • Demonstrate academic excellence
  • Other issues/circumstances that impact leadership potential can be considered at student request and committee suggestion.

Criteria for Empowerment Award

  • Full-time student taking at least 9 credit hours in the 2017 spring semester.
  • Both merit and financial need will be considered.
  • GPA of 2.9 or less
  • Self-motivation in completing challenging coursework
  • Have the potential to complete course of study even with a multiplicity of problems
  • Ability to communicate the hardships you have overcome or currently face

How to Apply

Completing the application is the first step to being a recipient of the Encouragement or Empowerment Grant Award. All required documentation must be submitted as well. Once all documentation is received from each potential award candidate, the information will be reviewed by the UEP Awards committee.

How Scholarships are awarded

  • The Urban Experience Program through its Awards Committee will award awards (20) scholarships during the 2017 spring academic semester.  
  • (10)- Encouragement Awards
  • (10)- Empowerment Awards
  • A one-time payment of $2,000 will be awarded to each selected recipient for tuition, fees, and books. (The Awards Committee may choose to adjust the scholarship award amount or the number of scholarships accordingly, based on the status of the scholarship fund.)
  • Scholarship recipients are asked to provide proof of course registration before the funds are granted to the award recipient.
  • Recipients will be selected by the UEP Awards Committee, whose decisions are final. Deliberations of the UEP Awards Committee will be confidential.
  • Scholarship recipients will be notified in writing.
  • Scholarship recipients will be announced in UEP participations and on UEP's website.
  • If a scholarship award recipient drops out of college, is removed from college, or moves out of the Urban Experience Program, the award recipient is required to return his or her scholarship award funding to UEP.
  • Applicants are eligible to apply and receive a scholarship in successive years.
  • The Urban Experience Award is awarded without regard to race, color, ancestry, sex, religion, age, handicap or veteran status.
