“I would tell anyone to apply to the CSE program. It is the best program on campus to me. The student workers are helpful, the staff is dedicated, and they have places to study in peace.”

Johnathan Allen is a senior at the University of Houston majoring in Broadcast Communications. He was the first person in his family to graduate from high school. He will be the first person in his family to graduate from college. His hometown is Bryan, TX.

What is your favorite memory as a CSE member?
I have many memories of the CSE. I love coming in there just seeing everyone and the family vibe we all have. It’s really cool. My favorite memory would have to be my first day there. I met my mentor, Ms. Sharlene Laud. She guided me through the college process when I was lost. The whole staff was so welcoming I’ve been coming ever since.

The CSE prepares me for my future daily. They offer so much such as grants, jobs, and scholarships. I received a scholarship to help with my tuition. I have also received a work-study job through the program. Their resources are limitless. I feel safe putting my career and future in their hands. They not only help you during college, but they help you get jobs after college as well. They show they truly care about their students.

What inspired you to major in Broadcast Communications?
I always wanted to be an announcer, broadcaster, journalist, or actor my whole life. As a child, I saw young black men like Tevin Campbell, Bobby Brown, and Tupac Shakur on television. I always wondered how to get on TV. I came to this college and meet some great friends and wonderful professors then things started happening for me. In each class, you should network and befriend your classmates. If you are in the same school, you will have similar interests. You never know what doors they can open for you.

What would be your dream job or dream accomplishment?
My dream job would be to have my own sports show or multiple shows on a major network. I loved sports. I love creating content; it is the perfect marriage.

What would you say to someone experience a personal challenge that is affecting their academics?
To anyone who is facing challenges, there is always something better coming. I have had bad grades because of work, having a kid, different living situations, but I buckled down and I brought them up. Nothing will be easy, but it helps when you have support. That is what CSE does – provide support, guidance, and love. Stop by and apply.
