“Every time I go [to the Center for Student Empowerment there] is always someone checking up on me reassuring me that if I need anything just to ask. It’s good to know I have options.”

What inspired your interest in teaching?
When I was a student in Stephen F. Austin Highschool, I got the opportunity to experience two different internships. One at Cage Elementary, where I got to be a teaching assistant for 2nd and 5th grade students. The students excelled my expectation, they were lovely and very bright. When I became pregnant my senior year, I got to intern as a 9th grade freshman biology class within my high school. The atmosphere was different, students lacked motivation, the work seemed “too hard” at the level they were in. That formed my question, “What had happened?” In between elementary and high school is middle school, which inspired me to become a middle school science teacher. I know middle school can difficult for students, that’s when they try to find themselves, try to fit in. Being a teen parent and growing up in a low-income family without my father in my life, I feel many of the students will relate to me. I hope to inspire them and build a path to help guide them.

What would be your dream job or dream accomplishment?
A dream accomplishment would be to bring life back into the classroom. I want to make science exciting and create a safe learning space for every type of student.

How did you hear about CSE? Or What has been the biggest benefit of being a part of CSE?
When I was in academic probation I was referred to CSE. It was nerve wrecking because I didn’t know anything about the program. Since then, CSE has helped me get through many obstacles. I’ve gotten help with pampers and textbooks and support. Every time I go there is always someone checking up on me reassuring me that if I need anything just to ask. It’s good to know I have options.

What would you say to someone experience a personal challenge that is affecting their academics?
Find help, whether you need help with finances, study skills, or just someone to talk too. I was shy to get help and my first semester went horribly. Once I found help I didn’t feel as alone. I wasn’t struggling as much as I use to. I learned studying skills that I now use by myself and they have been working so far. Even if your academics seem impossible to improve, it will. It takes time.
