Director, Children's Learning Centers
Hello, I am Sherry Howard the director of the University of Houston Children's Learning Centers. Prior to joining the Center in 2002, I worked as a Texas certified teacher and Even Start Director for a family literacy program in a local school district. I am a native Houstonian and fourth generation Texan. I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Dakota.
I have been married for over 30 years and have two sons who are UH graduates. My happiest moments are spent with my family. I love to read and believe literacy will always open doors. While my responsibilities are diverse at the Children's Learning Centers, I am committed to early childhood education and UH student success.
Assistant Director, Children's Learning Centers
Hello, I am Jennifer Skopal, UHCLC Assistant Director. I graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and completed my Masters of Education in Educational Psychology from the University of Houston in 2002.
Upon my UH graduation I began working at UHCLC and over the past 6 years I have taught all ages from one to five year olds. It has been quite an exciting time and I have learned more than I ever could have from a textbook. I am very fortunate to have worked with all age groups and have really enjoyed my experiences in each classroom.
With our Continuity of Care model, teachers now stay with a group of children as they grow and develop through their infant and toddler years. During this time, a special bond is formed as the children learn and explore the ever-changing world around them.
Currently I oversee all classrooms and curriculum, work with administrative staff, and assist in grant writing, child care tuition scholarships, parent orientations, and other various projects.

I am Cece Hernandez, Administrative/Operations Manager at CLC. I began working here in 1998 as a Student Assistant working my way up to an Assistant Teacher, Lead Teacher and my current position as manager. I graduated from UH in December 2010 with a degree in Communication Disorders.
I enjoy working at CLC because I have seen first hand how the children learn, develop and have fun in my experiences as both a teacher and as a parent of a CLC alumnus. I love to see the sense of discovery on a child’s face and smiles that light up a room. Everyday, I am fortunate enough to witness these moments of true magic! When I am not a work, I like to take road trips with my son, read, and study history.

Hi, I am Tiffany Nicole Mays, a Program Manager and a Lead Teacher in the Infant/Toddler Program. I joined the Center in fall of 1999. I received my CDA and Infant/Toddler Specialist credentials as well as pursuing my undergraduate degrees in Child Development, Sociology, and English. This career path has led me to meet child care professionals, to participate/co-lead ECD trainings, mentor students, and collaborate with teachers on the best-practice approach to caregiving.
My knowledge of children grows with each moment I spend in their presence. I love to listen and talk with them. Each child has a unique way of telling me what they need or desire. My wish as a childcare professional is to make each child feel safe enough to express their needs, relaxed enough to share their desires, and offer a developmentally suitable atmosphere so that the child can play and develop appropriate skills.
I have been married for more than 10 years and have three wonderful children. When I am not working, I enjoy reading, particularly children’s literature. I also enjoy tennis and nature walks.
My name is Nadeema Akhtar and I have been at CLC since 1991. I have worked as an Assistant Teacher, Lead Teacher, Master Teacher and currently as a Program Manager in the Pre-K program. I received a degree in Psychology in Pakistan and I have completed extensive training hours in early childhood education with an emphasis on curriculum (C.I.R.C.L.E. and Ramps and Pathways).
Teaching is my passion and I believe that if we wish to create a lasting peace and a good foundation for education, we must begin with young children. Besides teaching I love to travel, cook, sew and organize events. I am married and have two children.
