Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration Project

CORD (Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration) Project was awarded $25 million through the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  CORD is a multi-setting, multi-level model to improve underserved children’s risk factors for obesity.  It consists of three demonstration sites and an evaluation center.  The three sites are Texas (Austin and Houston), San Diego (El Centro, Brawley, and Calexico), and Massachusetts (New Bedford, Fitchburg, and Lowell).

The evaluation center is housed at the Texas Obesity Research Center, University of Houston.  The CORD project follows the obesity chronic care model by applying best strategies across the multiple levels and sites.  The CORD project hopes to determine whether the integration of the CORD model combining public health activities across community settings and healthcare settings impact obesity-related behaviors and health outcomes among participants.
