Who we are:

Dr. Molly Bray is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and an adjunct professor at UH. Dr. Bray’s research is focused on genetic factors that influence the development of obesity and response to obesity treatments. Molly is the Chief TIGER and loves teaching her step aerobics class for the study participants. Her hobbies include cycling, running, tennis, and reading. Little known fact: Molly was a chubby kid and used to take ballet lessons! (click on picture to email)


Dr. Andrew (Tony) Jackson
has been at UH since 1969. He is a Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance and is an adjunct professorship in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He has been a research consultant to the Cardio-pulmonary laboratory at NASA/Johnson Space Center since 1975. Tony is the Chief UH TIGER and keeps active by rowing every possible morning on Lake Livingston. Little known fact: After bringing his grades home from his first semester of college, his father asked: “Have you ever though about going into the Army?” He became a much better student after his Army tour.


Dr.Brian McFarlin
is an assistant professor in the department of Health and Human Performance. He received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2003. His research examines various issues related to age, health, exercise, and the immune system. He has recently developed a hypothesis with his collaborators that physical activity and exercise may possess anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce the risk of developing a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases (i.e. osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, etc.). In his free time, Brian enjoys exercising and spending time with his wife and new baby son. Little known fact: Brian was recently quoted in the New York Times!



Ian Turpin
has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Human Movement Studies from the Carnegie College of Physical Education, part of Leeds Metropolitan University in Northern England. He received his Master’s in Exercise Science here at the University of Houston. As well as working full time as the Project Manager of the TIGER Study, Ian is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Epidemiology at The University of Texas School of Public Health. His research interests are interventions to reduce cardio-vascular risk factors, in particular obesity. Ian’s hobbies include soccer, karate, scuba diving, trying to get better at playing guitar, and riding his Harley! Little known fact: Although once expelled from school for winking at the headmistress, Ian played the first shepherd in the nativity play.


Fred Miller
holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science from Huntington University and a Master of Science Degree in Sport Science from Eastern New Mexico University. His research interests include exercise attrition, body composition, and running performance. He coached college cross-country and track for two years and high school cross-country and track for one year. Fred has been a full-time Certified Personal Trainer, and his main hobby is competing in road races. Fred has run in seven marathons, one being the 2000 Chicago Marathon. Fred enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and watching movies.  Little known fact: When Fred was six years old he got into his Aunt's Cookie Jar when no one was looking and ate the white cream middle from all the Oreos and then put them back in the Jar!

Mary Sailors has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Masters degree in Exercise Science. Mary's research interests are focused on the neurophysiology of eating behaviors and exercise compliance.  Mary provides statistical expertise to the TIGER Study and manages the study database. Mary has taught sports conditioning and spinning classes for a number of years, and she loves all sports, especially golf.  Mary spends her free time taking care of her 3 Chihuahuas; Pablo, Picasso, and Onyx, and her newborn son, Aiden. Little known fact:  Mary can sometimes be found at the Bingo parlor on Saturday nights!   

 

Kathleen Kwie is a student pursuing a degree in Exercise Science at the University of Houston. She is applying to physical therapy school, hoping to start in Fall of 2008. She enjoys playing guitar and plays weekly at an Indonesian church. Kathleen competed in team gymnastics for five years and likes playing badminton, table tennis, and volleyball. Little known fact: Kathleen likes cutting and gluing and makes homemade birthday cards from scraps of paper for her friends.

 

Ygnacio Lopez III has a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Health Science Studies from Baylor University, and recently received his Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from Midwestern State University.  He is currently enrolled at the University of Houston and is pursuing his Ph.D. in Kinesiology.  His areas of interest involve analysis of various types of supplementation as they relate to the enviroment and the body's response to exercise.  His hobbies include watching and playing basketball and football.  He is originally from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but is NOT a Dallas Cowboys fan: His allegiance belongs to the Carolina Panthers.  Little known fact: Ygnacio was told by his teacher in high school that he should NOT attend Baylor, save money, and attend a Dallas Community College instead, since he wasn't going to make it anyway.  Good call.

AppleMark Norah Vasen is currently a post-baccalaureate student studying Nutrition at the University of Houston. After graduating in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Spanish, she spent a year traveling and working and returned to UH to study diet and health. She is an active member and officer for the Student Nutrition Association at UH. She enjoys yoga, traveling everywhere and anywhere, music and positive change. She is also a former TIGER Study participant and is happy she is able to contribute to scientific research. Norah intends on opening a locally grown food restaurant/health counseling/yoga center. Little Known Fact: Norah was a competitive figure skater for eight years.
