I am a first generation, college student who strives to make my family and those who have supported and believed in me proud. My biggest fear is failing my entire family who has placed an emphasis on education and the opportunities it provides. I fear that I would not be able to build upon the struggles that my family had upon arriving to this country with empty hands. I want to be able to build on those struggles at an institution where education is emphasized and the opportunities it provides are bountiful. I have been blessed with many opportunities and chances and I want to be able to provide that to others. I believe I can accomplish this by going into medicine. I hope to one day work with Doctors without Borders as well as other medical organizations around the world.
Campus and Community InvolvementI currently volunteer at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, elderly homes, and at my church. Occasionally, I also speak publically on talk segments with Vietnamese community leaders on 900 AM Radio.
Awards and Honors
The major awards and honors that I have received during my time in high school include: Graduating as Salutatorian, AP Scholar with Distinction, Vanguard Award, Shining Star Award, Impetus Initiative Award, Trailblazer Award, President’s Award for Educational Excellence, Most Likely to Succeed, National Forensics League Seal of: Merit, Honor, Excellence, Distinction, and Vietnamese-American Youth Excellence Recognition Award. As for scholarships besides the Tier One Scholarship, I also received the Presidential Scholarship from Fisk University and the Houston Endowment Scholarship.
To be honest, I have no idea where I want to study abroad yet. I do know that I really want to be able to experience the various cultures and languages of the area that I will one day be able to learn from. I am a firm believer that culture and language play a part in who you really are and I want to be able to see what makes people from other parts of the world special.
I am interested in research that focuses on advancing health care and how it is distributed. There are so many people in the world that do not have the chance to receive proficient health care and I believe that we must be able to provide such services.
Mohammed Ali once said “Service to others is the payment you make for your space here on earth.” I wholeheartedly agree which is why I plan to go into medicine in order to provide others with the blessings and opportunities that I have received.
