Varun PotluriDuane and Betsy Choate UH Tier One Scholarship Endowment
About MeI am a freshman Biology major at the University of Houston. I graduated from Debakey High School and I am also an assistant SEP facilitator for chemistry workshop. My main interests include math and sciences, whereas my main weakness lies in languages. I am inspired and motivated by both my peers and my family to succeed and learn more.
Campus and Community Involvement
I’m a volunteer at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Sheltering Arms Senior Service Center. I play sports recreationally, not in official teams. I’m not in any organizations as of now, but I do intent to join organizations second semester, such as AED, ACS, and HOSA.
Awards and Honors
I graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 2011 from Michael. E. Debakey High School. Other than the Tier One Scholarship, I received the UH Foundation Founder Scholarship as well as the Alliance for Minorities Scholarship.
During high school I learned Spanish and I hope to engage other individuals in the future in a Spanish-speaking country, which would most likely prove to be a truly enriching experience. Also, I hope that my experiences will help me to more fluently communicate in Spanish, as well as learn more about the cultural aspects and influences of the language. In the future, I may consider pursuing a minor in Spanish.
My previous experience with research was in the area of gastroenterology, which actually proved to be quite satisfying. I would like to continue exploring new areas of medicine and research, in order to gain more experience and hopefully apply my knowledge and experience later on. My research project was related to affect of colon electrical stimulation on constipation and colon transit. I plan to continue research throughout my academic career, which I know will serve as a valuable experience, particularly in its application in my future field of interest.
I plan to pursue a career in the medical field, possibly cardiology or radiology. I hope to attain a MD from Baylor College of Medicine because I am highly interested in the medical field and I hope to contribute to the society that has done so much for me thus far.
