Sahifah AnsariGerald W. McElvy UH TierOne Scholarship Endowment
I am interested in becoming a health educator to improve public health. In my spare time, I love cooking, baking, and watching Top Chef. I am a huge fan of foreign or independent film. I also like reading contemporary realistic fiction, reading and writing poetry, and blogging.
Campus and Community Involvement
I volunteer at different events like the Annual Feast of Sharing at George R. Brown Convention Center and at the Houston House of Charity. At UH, I am a member of the Muslim Students Association(MSA) and have volunteered with them for Meals on Wheels. I also volunteer for the annual UHMSA 5K Walkathon, participate in Showdown (a yearly statewide competition), and help organize other events for the organization regularly.
Awards and Honors
I am a National Merit Scholar.
In high school, I took Spanish and French, so I'd love to visit Spain or France to refresh my memory. I’ve been to Greece and Turkey in high school, and I would love to go back and study abroad there as well. I haven't studied abroad yet, but there are so many opportunities to at UH, so I'm looking forward to taking a mini-mester trip!
I currently work for the Center for Neuromotor and Biomechanics Research at the National Center for Human Performance under Dr. Stacey Gorniak. My current project involves gait analysis in simulated post-stroke conditions. In the summer of 2013, I plan on working with gait and posture in relation to obesity.
I plan on immediately putting my degree to use by assessing the
health needs of the community and serving my time to meet those needs.
