Spotlight: Passion for Environmental Conservation Earns Vanessa Alejandro First-ever Udall Scholarship for UH

About Me

I am a very happy and driven person. I try to see the positive side as much as possible and I strongly believe if there is a will then there is way. I am also a big family person. My family has been essential in helping me pursue my dreams. I am also very thankful, because without my wonderful parents, the Dawson HS school staff, and role models in my community I would not have realized the potential I have to fulfill my dreams. I also love the outdoors and anything that gets my muscles moving. I am generally a very easy to get along and love to try new things.

Campus and Community Involvement

I am currently the President of Warriors of the Wild, a non profit organization (under review by the IRS), that focuses on environmental education in the Greater Houston Area. I am also very involved with research, and am currently working for Dr. Wellner and will be working for Dr. Mann this summer. Outside of research and Warriors of the Wild, I am a member of the Honors College and am interested in making UH a greener campus.

Awards and Honors

In my department, I have won Outstanding Freshman in Geology, Outstanding Sophomore in Geology, and Outstanding Student in Field Methods. In the Honors College, I was award Outstanding Honors First Year Student and the Heather Bonser Scholarship. I was also recently named an Udall Scholar, which is a national award for students interested in Native American health and policy and environmental conservation.

Study Abroad

I am planning on studying abroad Summer of 2015. I will be participating in Geology Field Camp abroad.

Future Endeavors

After I finish my undergraduate degree, I will be participating in the Peace Corps. Then I will get my PhD in geology. I plan on doing both research in geology and sustainability.
