Vanessa AlejandroPeter Y. Tsan UH Tier One Scholarship Endowment
I am a very happy and driven person. I try to see the positive side as much as possible and I strongly believe if there is a will then there is way. I am also a big family person. My family has been essential in helping me pursue my dreams. I am also very thankful, because without my wonderful parents, the Dawson HS school staff, and role models in my community I would not have realized the potential I have to fulfill my dreams. I also love the outdoors and anything that gets my muscles moving. I am generally a very easy to get along with person and love to try new things. I am also a good friend.
Campus and Community Involvement
I was extremely involved in extracurricular activities in high school. I was the Varsity Soccer Captain for three years, Environmental Club President, and a member in Interact, Cross Country, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the National Honor Society. I am now involved in AISEIC, the Sustainability Task Force, UH Green, and Clean Energy Initiative at UH. One of my passions is helping others so I am a big volunteer. I volunteer during the summer at Christian Helping Hands, a food bank, and volunteered for six years as a junior swim coach on a swim team. During the school year I volunteer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and any events available.
Awards and Honors
I won several awards in soccer. I was awarded 1st Team All district my senior and junior year. My sophomore year I made 2nd Team All District. I was also awarded Offensive MVP two years in a row, Academic All District, and Heart of the Eagle. I also won several academic awards: National Hispanic Merit Scholar, Wendy’s Heisman School Award, All A’s, SOAR: Achievement (School award), English Award, University Interscholastic League Scholar, President’s Education Awards Program, and AP Scholar. I was lucky enough to win the Tier One Scholarship and other scholarships: Standard Bearers Leadership Scholarship, Pearland Lions Club Scholarship, Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship, and Waste Connections Scholarship. At UH I plan on trying to reach my full potential as a student, leader, and scientist.
Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to study abroad since I am an incoming freshman. However, studying abroad is definitely one of my goals. I would love to visit Africa and experience the culture and roam the terrain. South America and Australia are also on my list to visit. I plan to explore the as much of the world as I can because the places available to experience new cultures and topographies is endless.
I plan on joining the Peace Corps. after I finish my undergraduate degree. Then I will get my PhD. This experience and my extensive knowledge will help me be well prepared for my career. I am an environmental activist and will be an environmental researcher. I plan on making a global impact by changing people’s mindset about the environment. I also want to be a National Geographic Explorer.
