Kathryn "Kaye" Stripling UH Tier One Scholarship Endowment
As a graduate of Hightower High School's Medical Academy, I spent my high school years shadowing physicians at renowned hospitals, such as M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and as a section leader and small ensemble director in my school’s award-winning choir. Music, especially choral music, has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. I am now a choral music education major, singing in this university’s top undergraduate choir as well as its opera productions, and a pre-med student, continuing to shadow physicians and engaging in medical research outside of the university.
Campus and Community Involvement
Aside from being a member of the University of Houston Concert Chorale and a singer in the Moores Opera Center, I am also a member of Ardore, a student-led choral ensemble created to give its members a chance to gain real choral conducting experience. Off campus, I am a music teacher for the religious school of Congregation Beth Israel, a cantorial soloist at Temple Sinai, and I also teach music lessons to children in the community. I also spend time shadowing physicians in the Texas Medical Center, and I volunteer at Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, both in their medical research department and as a client escort.
Awards and Honors
I was a three-year member of the Texas Music Educators Association’s All-State Choir, and won many awards at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest as well. On the medical side, I was selected to attend the Health Occupation Students of America’s National Leadership Conference in 2009, as well as their State Leadership Conference in both 2009 and 2010. At Congregation Beth Israel, I was recognized as the Most Outstanding Confirmand and was awarded the Karff Scholarship. In 2010, I made the UH College of Liberal Arts and Social Science’s Dean’s List, and in 2011 I was chosen as a Most Outstanding Freshmen of The Honors College for 2010-2011.
I would love to travel to participate in a choir or opera program in Europe. I studied French for several years and would also like to travel to France for language immersion.
I currently assist in the medical research department at Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, where there are often several drug studies and diagnostic device studies going on concurrently. I would also be greatly interested in any type of research in the music school.
I have several possible career aspirations, from which I am often unable to choose! I hope to be a medical doctor, a choral conductor at the professional level, or a vocal performer and teacher, and I currently am studying, observing, and gaining experience for all three fields.
