Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation UH Tier One Scholarship Endowment
Although I’m a vocal major, I’ve played piano since 1st grade. I’m a member of the Moores School of Music Concert Chorale, and I traveled with them to France in the summer of 2011 to compete in the international Florilège Vocal de Tours. I also enjoy reading and doing craft projects. I’m a very goal-oriented person, and I strive to do my best in all that I do.
Campus and Community Involvement
As mentioned above, I’m a member of Concert Chorale, serving as Soprano Section Leader this year. I’m also involved in the Moores Opera Center and two smaller a capella ensembles, Ardore and A Cabellas. I am also a Moores School of Music Ambassador. I’m a member of NSCS and the Honors College. I’m also very involved in my church music and youth ministries, and I am a paid Schola singer at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. I volunteer regularly with the Houston Chamber Choir. Finally, I am the Vice-President, Membership, for Sigma Alpha Iota, international music fraternity for women.
Awards and Honors
In high school, I was a two-year member of the Texas All-State Choir; I participated in the Texas State Solo & Ensemble contest as well, and was named an Outstanding Soloist. My senior year, I was selected to be a part of the Houston Grand Opera’s High School Voice Studio, which only takes 8 seniors from the Houston area each year. I was an AP Scholar with Honors, a member of various honor societies, and a National Merit Commended student. In addition to the Tier One Scholarship, I received the Texas Music Educators Association Past President’s Scholarship, a Moores School of Music Scholarship, and the Moody Foundation Scholarship. Beyond these four renewable scholarships, I received 8 other one-time-only awards. I recently was awarded a scholarship from the Texas Choral Directors Association.
I took Italian this past school year, and I fell in love with the language. Ideally, I would like to go to Italy to study abroad (ideally in a language emersion program) so that I can put my language skills into practice, as well as to have a chance to explore the musically significant parts of the country.
As a music major, I didn’t think there would be many research options that would appeal to me. However, upon further investigation, I have found several options that I find very interesting. If I do a research project, it would be great to do something involving choral music, opera work, or vocal pedagogy. I hope to pursue some type of research project during my undergraduate career.
Beyond my Bachelor’s degree, I plan to get a Master’s degree in either vocal performance or choral conducting. At this point, I am not entirely sure what path my career will take, but I look forward to whatever musical experience I will have. I want to eventually earn my Doctoral degree in a music field (most likely choral conducting).
