Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation UH Tier One Scholarship Endowment
Although I’m a vocal major, I’ve played piano since 1st grade. I’m a member of the Moores School of Music Concert Chorale, and I traveled with them to France in the summer of 2011 to compete in the international Florilège Vocal de Tours and to Germany in the summer of 2013, where we won the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition. I also enjoy reading and doing craft projects. I’m a very goal-oriented person, and I strive to do my best in all that I do.
Campus and Community Involvement
As mentioned above, I’m a member of Concert Chorale, in which I have served as Soprano Section Leader and Student Director. I’m also involved in the Moores Opera Center and two smaller a capella ensembles, Ardore and A Cabellas. I am also a Moores School of Music Ambassador. I’m a member of NSCS and the Honors College. I’m also a paid Schola singer at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. I volunteer regularly with the Houston Chamber Choir. Finally, I am the President of the Beta Pi chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity.
Awards and Honors
In high school, I was a two-year member of the Texas All-State Choir; I participated in the Texas State Solo & Ensemble contest as well, and was named an Outstanding Soloist. My senior year, I was selected to be a part of the Houston Grand Opera’s High School Voice Studio, which only takes 8 seniors from the Houston area each year. I was an AP Scholar with Honors, a member of various honor societies, and a National Merit Commended student. In addition to the Tier One Scholarship, I received the Texas Music Educators Association Past President’s Scholarship, a Moores School of Music Scholarship, and the Moody Foundation Scholarship. Beyond these four renewable scholarships, I received 8 other one-time-only awards. I recently was awarded a scholarship from the Texas Choral Directors Association.
I took Italian my sophomore year, and I fell in love with the language. Ideally, I would like to go to Italy to study abroad (ideally in a language immersion program) so that I can put my language skills into practice, as well as to have a chance to explore the musically significant parts of the country.
As a music major, I didn’t think there would be many research options that would appeal to me. However, upon further investigation, I have found several options that I find very interesting. If I do a research project, it would be great to do something involving choral music, opera work, or vocal pedagogy. I hope to pursue some type of research project during my undergraduate career.
Beyond my Bachelor’s degree, I plan to get a Master’s degree in either vocal performance or choral conducting. At this point, I am not entirely sure what path my career will take, but I look forward to whatever musical experience I will have. I want to eventually earn my Doctoral degree in a music field (most likely choral conducting).
