Tier One Scholars Coordinator

Veronique V. Tran, Ph.D.

Dr. Veronique V. Tran is the Tier One Scholars Coordinator. She assists and mentors Tier One Scholars from the time they enter UH until they graduate.  These are facilitated by coffee chat sessions, info sessions, and one-on-one advising.

Dr. Tran is also the founding Director of UH Learning through Discovery, the office established in 2008 to coordinate the implementation of the Quality Enhancement Plan to transform the undergraduate experience through discovery-based learning.  She has presented workshops at the SACS COC annual meeting and served as a consultant on QEP development at Southern Methodist University, George Mason University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Texas Woman’s University, and several other institutions.

She also serves as the campus Fulbright Program Advisor at UH and facilitates education partnerships with institutions abroad.  She is active in K-12 outreach and has served on various boards and review panels including the UH Engineering Alumni Association Board of Directors, the National Science Foundation Grant Review Panel, the U.S. Department of State’s Boren Scholarship and Gilman Scholarship National Review Committees,  and the Texas Emerging Technology Fund  Review Committee for the Gulf Coast Regional Center for Innovation and Commercialization.

Dr. Tran is an alumnus of the University of Houston (B.S. Chemical Engineering, 1991) and was an engineer in the energy and health sectors, including positions at Shell, ExxonMobil, and Johnson & Johnson.  After earning her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering (2002) from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, she completed her postdoctoral training at Yale University.  Dr. Tran was a founding faculty member in biomedical engineering at UH (2004‐2006). During her one‐year appointment at Rice University as Executive Director of the Department of Bioengineering, Dr. Tran coordinated constituent relations including communications, student career development, faculty awards, alumni relations, corporate relations, and the External Advisory Board. In Fall 2007, Dr. Tran returned to the University of Houston to lead the development and implementation of the UH Quality Enhancement Plan.  In 2010, her role expanded to include the Tier One Scholars Program Coordinator and UH Fulbright Program Advisor.
