These are the areas that are explored in Digital Media in the College of Technology at the University of Houston. By using your leadership talents, you can create a communications tapestry by weaving together people and contemporary communications technologies. Effective contemporary communication requires a mix of technologies--still- and motion-photography, web sites, mobile apps, and social media in addition to printed materials--in order to get the right message to the right person at the right time using the right media.

Digital Media

The Digital Media program prepares technologically-savvy leaders for positions in the digital media industry. Students who enroll in this program will gain competencies in various graphic-related technologies that support the digitization of graphic and text content as well as a broad background in leadership and supervision. Much of the curriculum is devoted to the utilization of digital-media-oriented information technology as it impacts the graphic work flow. Graduates from this program move into positions of service support in businesses specializing in communication through print, internet, multimedia, photographic, and video technologies. Service support positions that graduates assume are typically part of the larger sales function of digital media firms and include titles such as customer service representative, estimator, planner, supervisor, producer, and scheduler. For graduates to move into salesperson positions, they generally build upon the skills they have mastered in other service-support positions within digital media firms. Digital Media, which is part of both the Communications Technologies and Computer and Information Sciences cluster of industries, is a dynamic and ever-changing field and is ranked among the largest industries in the United States.

Digital Media courses are primarily taught on the University of Houston’s satellite campus in Sugar Land.

Course Content

Digital Media (DIGM) courses are offered by the Information and Logistics Technology Department in the University of Houston´s College of Technology. DIGM courses cover bitmapped and vector computer graphics, digital photography, videography, visual design concepts, prepress technologies, web design, ePublishing, packaging, animation technologies, image transfer, and industry trends. Courses include theory-rich lectures as well as hands-on and enjoyable activities conducted in our state-of-the-art laboratories on the latest equipment. Each student also completes a senior project and is encouraged to pursue an internship.

DIGM students also participate in Information Technology, Supply Chain, and Organizational Leadership courses. These supportive courses help prepare DIGM students to manage all types of media projects from ideation through delivery.

Program Design

Your degree in Digital Media is designed to be completed in four years and consists of 120 undergraduate credit hours. The program requires 42 hours of university core (general education) courses which may be fulfilled at UH or by taking a Core-Complete degree plan at a Community College.

The DIGM major requires 60 hours of Digital Media courses that introduce students to computer graphics, web design, digital photography, visual design, print production control, videography, multimedia/animation, and costing and estimating. Course descriptions and prequisites can be found in the UH Catalog. Additional required core classes include courses in information technology, leadership and supervision, project and team leadership, quality control, supply chain management, and sales. These courses are required so that graduates will be able to manage digital media projects.

Digital Media students also select one of the following 12-hour areas of emphasis:

  • Print Media
  • eMedia
  • Video Production
  • eCommerce
  • Packaging

These areas of emphasis allow students to taylor their educations to their needs and career aspirations by building upon the basic skills learned in the Digital Media core.

The program also provides for six hours of electives. Students may choose to complete a three-hour internship as part of this elective block. Or, students can use this block to transfer-in related courses from other UH departments, schools, and colleges or from other institutions.

University core classes and many of the lower-division DIGM courses can be completed at cooperating community college campuses, including Wharton County Junior College, Houston Community College, Lone Star College, and Austin Community College. If you are a community college student, please speak with your instructor or counselor about course transferability to UH.

Accreditation

The Digital Media program is fully accredited by the Accrediting Council for Collegiate Graphic Communications (ACCGC). The primary purpose of ACCGC is to foster voluntary attainment of professional standards and to encourage excellence, integrity, and continuous improvement consistent with the stated mission and objectives of the program, which inspire the confidence of the educational community, the industry, and the public being served. Accreditation represents the primary mechanism for addressing these issues of educational quality across graphic communications programs.

Your Future

The Digital Media program also provides extensive internship opportunities for its students as well as opportunities to network with industry professionals. In particular, the UH chapter of the International Graphic Arts Education Association (IGAEAUH) sponsors bi-annual "meet and greet" opportunities so that students can learn about career opportunities first-hand from industry practitioners.
