Welcome to the Abramson Center for the Future of Health. The Center has one purpose: to improve the health of individuals in Houston and the world.
We are accomplishing that mission through programs in translational research, education, and bioinformatics that empower individual patients to make the right health care decisions for themselves and their families—no matter who they are or where they live.
During the past century, health care technology has made incredible progress. Yet, despite all the data that we have accumulated and all the machines that we've installed at hospital bedsides, we have made little or no progress at relating those data to individual patients. A pregnant woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer has no randomized controlled trial to help her decide what to do. And she is not an exception: most patients face treatment choices with only "odds" and probabilities to guide them.
The Center is confronting this problem from several directions: from genetic research and personalized medicine, to patient and provider education, to remote sensors and web-based programs that help patients make choices that are completely tailored to them as individuals.
We believe that the Center is leading an important revolution in health care—one that will make health care safer, better, and more responsive to patients' needs. I hope that you will take the time to explore our site and learn about the exciting projects that the Center is pursuing.
