Take Your Child to Work Day

On Friday, June 8, 2018 bring your children for the second-annual Take Your Child to Work Day!  Children ages 6-13 have the opportunity to come to work and participate in activities on campus (parents must accompany children).  Children will receive a voucher for free lunch at Fresh Food Company.

Activities

 

Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts

Event Start: Moores School of Music Lobby

“The Arts Experience”: Children will tour all areas (art, music, theatre & dance) of the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts paired with hands-on, interactive activities.  Blaffer Art Museum will offer tours of the museum as well as fun-filled art-making activities.  Participants should bring their imagination, as all materials will be provided, and dress for art making and touring the arts quadrangle known as “The Grove”.

They will explore the exciting world of the arts while activating their creativity.  From artistic petting zoos to demonstrations to performances, there won’t be a dull moment.  Parents will collaborate with their children while watching their transformation right before their eyes!

 

M.D. Anderson Library

Event Start: Elizabeth Rockwell Pavilion, 2nd Floor of the Library

Children will make their own book, play games, or build with Lego while waiting to begin their library "treasure hunt."  They will get a behind-the-scenes look at the library with prizes at each station, learn about evaluating information sources from a UH librarian, and get their picture taken at the Library photo booth.  The morning will wrap up with a screening of the film Monsters University and a snack.

 

C.T.Bauer College of Business

Event Start: Classroom and Business Building (CBB Room 328-330), Third Floor

Children will participate in a fun team building activity and build their own dream boards, a physical board representing their thoughts, dreams, and favorite subjects.

 

College of Technology

Event Start: Technology Building 2 (T2 Room 201), Second Floor

Building Challenge: Construct items using marshmallows and uncooked noodles-group will be put into teams and the instructor will come up with what each team is going to construct: for example a bridge

Virtual Construction: Augmented Reality – looking at design of a house and an industrial facility using iPads and Microsoft HoloLens

Craft: Design a T-shirt using fabric markers (What does Technology represent to you)

Office of Sustainability

Event Start: UH Food Garden, near the corner of Cullen and Wheeler, outside Cougar Woods

Gardening Activities: Various activities needed to maintain a garden to include weeding, planting, harvesting, and trimming vegetables. 

Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Event Start: Philip Guthrie Hoffman hall (PGH Room 232), Second Floor

Computer Science: Introduction to the CS Gaming Program, Success Stories concerning US Imagine Cup, US Imagine Cup Game Demo, VR/AR-based Serious Game Demo (Oculus VR and Microsoft HoloLens)

Physics: Meissner effect (superconductivity) demonstration, gyroscope rotating stools/wheels activity, and connecting circuits!

Chemistry: Demonstrations from students in the American Chemical Society; elephant toothpaste, dry ice, lava lamps and more!
