Barbara McGinity was a treasured GCSW alumna having served on the GCSW Alumni Association Board of Directors for eleven years where she held the position of Treasurer up until her passing. She was 64 years old on February 7, 2016 at the time of her unexpected death. Barbara drew upon her boundless energy to live her life to the fullest with the things she was most passionate about including travel, wine, anything associated with UH, Houston sporting events, the performing arts and the profession of social work. She loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Barbara was born and raised in Houston, grew up in Spring Branch and received her BA in Sociology from UH in 1974, a Masters in College Student Personnel in 1978 from Western Illinois University, and a MSW from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work in 2000. She was well known throughout the Houston social work community serving as Program Director for the Better Business Bureau Education Foundation where she focused on issues related to the financial exploitation of elders and managed the Texas Senior Medicare Patrol Grant.

Barbara was an enthusiastic Life Member of the UH Alumni Association, a Cougar Pride Member since 1987, a Member of the 1927 Society and 46er’s. In May of this year, Barbara will be honored by UH Alumni Association as the 2015 Outstanding Alumni Volunteer. She was selected as GCSW Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni awardee in 2009. Barbara served as President for Theater LaB Houston, as Secretary for the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Board, and was a Houston Proud Volunteer where she served in numerous leadership positions.

Barbara leaves behind her beloved husband, Mike, her mother and all of her friends and colleagues who knew and loved her.

A party to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held on Saturday, April 30 from 11:00am - 8:00pm at the McGinty Home on 4502 Tilson Lane Houston, TX 77021. Tributes will be held at 2:00pm and at 7:30pm in an open house format. Food and beverages provided with a BBQ dinner at 6:00pm. Please RSVP by April 27 and indicate your attendance at the dinner. Barbara Parrott McGinity's Celebration of Life Event will be held on Saturday, April 30th at the McGinity home located at 4502 Tilson Lane in Houston, TX. The event will take place from 11:00 am - 8:00 pm. All are welcome.
