In this revised format learn the skills necessary to take the licensing exam. Intensively review major topics with a section devoted solely to four major categories of the DSM-IV-TR. Handouts and practice tests for the LMSW, LMSW-AP, and LCSW exams are included. Develop the necessary confidence to take the exam.

Course Cost:  Sign-up for both courses for $150.00 or each individual course is $90.00.

Course Objectives:

Part I:  Participants will be able to 1) list the values and standard areas in the NASW code of ethics; 2) list the primary concepts for at least three different theories of psychosocial development; and 3) list at least three theoretical frameworks for direct social work practice with individuals, families and groups.

Part II: Participants will be able to 1) identify the diagnostic criteria for five different types of schizophrenia; 2) identify the diagnostic criteria for Bipolar I and Bipolar II mood disorders; and 3) identify the diagnostic criteria for three different types of personality disorders.

About the Instructors:

Patricia Taylor, (Trish), is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and approved Texas LCSW supervisor. An experienced practitioner, she currently is the Curriculum Coordinator for the Child Welfare Education Project and Adjunct Faculty at the Graduate College of Social Work, University of Houston. She has presented numerous workshops for the Protective Services Training Institute of Texas and invited papers at professional meetings.

Susan P. Robbins is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. She holds licenses as an Advanced Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in Texas and a Diplomat in Forensic Social Work from the American Board of Forensic Social Workers. She also holds a Diplomat in Clinical Social Work from the National Association of Social Workers and from the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. She has presented numerous workshops and invited papers at professional meetings as well as for the Texas Protective Services Training Institute and the State of New Mexico Permanency Planning Project. She also serves on several editorial boards and is a consulting editor for Social Work and the Journal of Social Work Education.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION IN SOCIAL WORK (Spring 2014)

A 40 hour LCSW Supervision Course approved by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners

Dates: March 13 - 14 and April 10 - 11, 2014

Schedule: 8:30am - 4:30pm on Thursdays and Fridays (1 hour lunch)

Location: Communities in Schools of Houston, Inc., 1235 North Loop West, Suite 300

Course Fee: $550 (Early Bird Registration)  $600 (Registration after March 1, 2014)

About the Course:

This 40 course is designed for Licensed Clinical Social Workers who are interested in advancing their knowledge, skill, and experience in clinical social work supervision and in fulfilling licensing requirements to be an approved LCSW supervisor (as set forth by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners 781.102).  This course will be delivered in 28 hours of face to face classroom work and in 12 hours of supervised independent, structured work designed for course preparation, exploration, reflection, and integration of content.

The four day course will consist of five modules and twelve hours of independent work to be completed throughout the course period. Independent work consists of an in-depth review of the TSBSWE rules and regulations regarding LCSW clinical supervision, exploration of supervisory fit and style, assigned readings, and development of supervisory forms.

Module 1          Key Elements of Clinical Social Work Supervision: Creating and Sustaining an Effective Supervisory Relationship                
Module 2 Process and Phases of Clinical Social Work Supervision: Promoting Growth, Development and Self-Care
Module 3 Supervisory Models and Methods: Developing Conceptual Knowledge of Models, Methods, and Techniques
Module 4 Critical Issues in Clinical Social Work Supervision: Managing Clinical Challenges in the Supervisory Relationship
Module 5 Cultural Competence, Ethical and Legal Issues: Maintaining an Ethical Practice of Clinical Supervision

Participants will receive a 40 hour certificate of completion for the course (includes 6 hours of ethics hours) if they have attended all face-to-face classes and completed independent work.

About the Faculty:

Sandra A. Lopez, LCSW, ACSW, DCSW is a retired Clinical Professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and maintains a clinical and consulting practice in Houston.  She has 34 years of social work experience and has provided supervision and consultation to numerous social workers pursuing their LCSW.

Kay G. Schiller, LCSW, ACSW, DCSW is a social worker with 25 years of social work experience and maintains a clinical practice in Houston. She has served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and has provided LCSW supervision to social workers across a variety of social work settings.

Patricia Taylor, Ph.D., LCSW is a social worker with 29 years of clinical practice and consultation experience in Houston and Longview, Texas. She has served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and has provided LCSW supervision to many LMSW’s since 1991.  She has also taught a course on supervision and consultation within the UHGCSW.

About the Course:

Using the ground-breaking work of Stephen R. Covey (Seven Habits of Highly Effective People) as a framework, this 3 hour ethics session will explore seven areas of significance to clinical social work supervisors.  This highly interactive session will briefly define the significance of the areas in the process of supervision, allow for individual participant’s assessment of their strengths and limitations, and ultimately identify specific strategies for improving one’s effectiveness as an ethically competent clinical social work supervisor.  This session is designed for social workers who have met the earlier requirements of a 40 hour course and who now want to meet the established requirements for advanced clinical supervisor training as set by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners.

Objectives:

At the end of the 3 hour workshop, participants will be able to:1. Develop a framework for understanding seven key areas related to the process and practice of clinical supervision in social work;2. Assess their strengths and limitations around these seven established areas; and3. Identify specific strategies for improving one’s effectiveness as an ethically competent clinical supervisor.
