University of Houston Student Support Departments
Scholar Enrichment Program Website! http://www.uh.edu/sepweb/
SEP uses a different type of approach than traditional retention and enhancement programs. Instead of targeting high risk students,
the program identifies and targets high-risk courses
(those having high rates of D's, F's or withdrawals).
These courses include (but are not limited to) College Algebra,
Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
Louis Stokes: http://www.hlsamp.uh.edu/
The primary goal of the Houston LSAMP, propelled by a partnership among the National Science Foundation,
the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Southwest Texas State University, Rice University,
the University of Houston-Downtown, the University of Houston-Victoria, the Houston Community College System,
the San Jacinto College District, the Houston Independent School District, and numerous corporations,
is to double, within five years, the number of minority students earning baccalaureate degrees each year
in STEM fields from the participating universities and prepare them for entry to graduate programs.
Scholars Community: http://www.scholars.uh.edu/
The Scholars' Community consists of students who have made the decision to join an academic community
that is designed to help them navigate through the Core Curriculum and to feel more a part of the University of Houston.
The objectives of the Scholars' Community are to assist our students during the difficult transition from their high schools
or other institutions of learning to a big-and often impersonal-urban university;
to extend a support system within a large, urban campus;
and to provide a smoother and more efficient path toward their degrees.
Challenger Program: http://www.las.uh.edu/cp/
The Challenger Program offers an array of unique programs that are educationally
and intellectually enriching. The Challenger Program also helps to develop a positive attitude towards academic
and personal goals, which essentially help you to get through college a little easier,
to help you balance your life as a college student.
Learning Assessment Program http://www.las.uh.edu/
The mission of Learning and Assessment Services (LAS) is to promote student success by identifying needs, providing support services,
and offering outreach activities and evaluation services to the university community.
Learning assistance programs comprise tutoring, academic success counseling,
wellness and parenting education, academic and personal development workshops, cultural enrichment activities, and computer-aided instructional resources. Assessment activities
include coordination of focus groups; interviews; survey research; and administration of diagnostic, psychological, placement, and admission testing.
LAS assists with measurement and evaluation services designed to improve the quality of education and programs through evaluations,
instrumentation, data analysis, program evaluation, and outcome assessment.
