TEAMS 2009
This year, SHPE successfully hosted its first TEAMS competition at the University of Houston. This competition challenged high school students to test their knowledge in physics and their creativity by constructing a roller coaster out of standardized material. Groups were broken up into teams of 5 and each was handed the exact same amount and type of materials. With a time frame of 30 minutes to complete their designs, no one had time to lose
Objective
The objective of the competition was to increase interest in engineering and technology-based careers, promote the University of Houston's Engineering Department and increase the number minority students pursing STEM majors.
Approach
SHPE started planning this event in August 2008. With the help of one of our sponsors, Shell, SHPE was able to provide funding for schools with low funding, allowing us to achieve our goal of increasing participation of minority students.
Results
Of the 104 students that participated in this competition, each was able to showcase their creativity and knowledge of STEM material. Many students showed an interest in attending the University of Houston's College of Engineering after spending time talking with the volunteers about their college experiences. Coaches were given material to encourage the students to pursue STEM careers and attend more math and science competitions.
Conclusions
Ultimately, the event was a complete success. In the future, SHPE plans to continue offering more events like math and science competitions.
