Purpose:
The purpose of the Student Government Association's (SGA) Legislative Intern Program is to develop student
government leaders at the University of Houston, by matching interested students with current SGA Senators.
The Senators would then act as "mentors" to the participating students.
Requirements of Participating SGA Members:
Interested Senators must inform the Legislative Branch Coordinator (i.e. the Speaker of the Senate) of their
interest in working with a Legislative Intern. The SGA member's responsibility will be to educate the Intern
as to the purpose of SGA, and to do so in a professional manner conducive to the student government at the
University of Houston. Additional requirements would be to show an interest in the development of future
student leaders at the University of Houston and to exhibit behavior that reflects this philosophy. We
suggest that Senators meet with their Interns on a regular basis to involve them in SGA as much as possible.
There is a one hour requirement per week for each participating SGA member to meet with his or her intern.
Requirements of Participating Interns:
All participating students must be registered University of Houston students, either full or part time. The
program is open to students of all classifications. To qualify as a Legislative Intern, the interested student
must first submit an application form to the Executive Offices of SGA. All applications for Legislative
Internships will be forwarded to the Legislative Coordinator (i.e. the Speaker of the Senate). Each branch's
coordinator will review the application, interview the applicant, and arrange a meeting between the new
Intern and the "mentor" (SGA member). The SGA member and the new Intern will then determine the scope of
interaction between the two of them.
Accountability:
For accountability purposes, all Interns must submit a monthly report to the Coordinator of his or her
branch, who will periodically meet with all of the Interns on an individual basis. If, at any time, a
participating member is dissatisfied with their match, the person will contact their Coordinator for
appropriate action.
Benefits of the Legislative Intern Program:
To the Intern:
The program allows interns to learn, first hand, how all aspects of student government work at
the University of Houston. It also allows them to develop leadership and interpersonal skills as
well as an understanding that will hopefully lead them in a direction most beneficial to student
representation at the University of Houston.
To the SGA Member:
The program will benefit participating SGA members by providing them with assistance in their
duties on a daily basis. At the same time, this program will enable current SGA members to pass
on their thoughts, philosophies, and experiences concerning student government at the University
of Houston for years to come.
