Composites Comprising Biologically-Synthesized Nanomaterials

The Innovation

Certain anaerobic bacteria, such as Bacillus selenitireducens have the ability to respire oxyanions of the elements selenium and tellurium, and in so doing produce unusual nano-sized crystals of the “native” forms of these two elements. This is a demonstration of a practical application of these novel substances in the realm of nano-photonics.

Competitive Edge

This is a largely unexplored application of microbiologically-formed materials in the realm of nano-photonics. The embodiments of this invention herald a new philosophy of nanocomposite formation using nano-bio manufacturing of fillers in combination with a polymer host.

Targeted Market

Industrial “green” production for future nano-photonic materials.
