De-alloyed platinum nanoparticles

Membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for PEMFC were prepared by applying catalysts and ionomer on the membrane and then electrochemically de-alloying base metal rich cathode catalysts by applying potential to the electrode. These MEAs were further treated with sulfuric acid and de-ionized water to remove the de-alloyed base metals.

Competitive Edge

X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that extent of de-alloying is higher for electrochemical method observed by the shift in lattice parameter closer to pure Pt after treatment. MEA cathodes prepared by in-situ electrochemical method are active several times for oxygen reduction reaction compared to state of the art Pt catalyst.
