Certain anaerobic bacteria, such as Bacillus selenitireducens have the ability to respire oxyanions of the elements selenium and tellurium, and in so doing produce unusual nano-sized crystals of the “native” forms of these two elements. This is a demonstration of a practical application of these novel substances in the realm of nano-photonics.
