Linear motor geometry for use with persistent current magnets

The Innovation

A novel linear motor geometry that makes possible the use of superconductors in persistent current mode in both the primary and secondary.

Competitive Edge

The motor is well-suited for use in electromagnetic launch because sliding current pickups are not needed for the secondary, the power supply can be arbitrarily small, and no quench or other switching of the primary is necessary during a launch.

Targeted Market

The primary commercial application of the motor is as a launcher for sounding rockets. Other applications include satellite assembly and maintenance, space station resupply, or direct launch to the moon.
