Educational Series

Each week at Outdoor Adventure, we offer a variety of educational skills classes at $5 each per person to the UH community.  Classes focus on teaching the basic skills and techniques of various outdoor pursuits.

Fundamentals of Belaying

Spots are limited to 8 participants per course.

This two hour course will instruct you on the proper methods of roped climbing at UH. Upon successful completion of this course you will be ready to take the skills verification exam and belay at the climbing wall!

Movements of Climbing

Spots are limited to 8 participants per course.

This new program will teach participants all the technique they need to take their climbing to the next level. Beginner climbers are highly recommended to take this class.

Lead Climbing

OA’s lead climbing class is a must-have for any climber looking for advancement in skills and the transition to outdoor climbing. Participants must demonstrate satisfactory climbing at a 5.10 level. This class focuses on advanced techniques and rope systems required to safely lead climb at all heights and difficulties. Contact OA to set-up a time for check skills prior to enrolling. Water Sports

Spots are limited to 8 participants per course.

This two hour course will focus on teaching a solid foundation of kayaking ,surfing, or stand up paddle boarding. SUP/Surfing class will focus on the basic steps to standing up, paddling, balancing, and riding a long board or SUP. Beginner Kayak will teach all the basics of kayaking including paddle strokes, reading water, and basic rescue skills. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided. Don’t forget a swimsuit and towel!

Land Specialty

All Land Specialty classes will be held from 5:00-7:00pm on the date for which they are scheduled. For more detailed information regarding our specialty classes, please contact the Outdoor Adventure office or speak with an Outdoor Adventure Staff member.

  • What is the Educational Series?
    Each week Outdoor Adventure (OA) offers a variety of educational classes (clinics).  Clinics focus on teaching the basic skills and techniques of climbing, kayaking, and surfing.
  • Who can enroll in a clinic?
    All current members of the CRWC are eligible to sign-up for a clinic – This includes students enrolled in classes and individual memberships.
  • What if I am a member of the CRWC, can I bring a guest that is not affiliated with UH?
    Yes, CRWC members may also “sponsor” a guest by purchasing a Daily Guest Pass at the CRWC Welcome Desk for $7.00 adult.
  • Is there an age/size requirement participant to enroll in a clinic?
    Yes, you must be 18 years old or a current UH student.
  • How what types of clinics do you offer?
    At this time, we offer educational classes in climbing, kayaking, surfing, and land specialty. Other pursuits may be added in the future!
  • How much to clinics cost?
    If you are a current member of the CRWC, or are admitted entrance on Daily Guest Pass, there is a $5 additional cost for the climbing, surfing, and kayaking instruction.  The class requires an additional fee.
  • Is any experience required?
    For the educational classes, no experience is necessary!
  • How do I enroll in a clinic?
    To enroll, stop by the Climbinb wall. You will need to sign-up and complete a Release Form. Pay the $5 charge at the membership desk.
  • Is there a limited on how many people can enroll?
    In order to keep the instructor-to-student ratio low, we do limit the number of participants. The climbing clinic is limited to 4 participants and both the surf and kayak clinics are limited to 8 individuals. 
  • How often are the clinics offered?
    Throughout the school year, the climbing class is offered two days a week.  Kayaking and surfing are alternated every-other week, creating a bi-monthly schedule.
  • Can I attend multiple clinics of the same skill?
    Yes, currently the clinics are not progressive, so if you feel you need more practice on a particular skill set, feel free to enroll in another class!
  • What if I signed-up for a clinic, but I cannot attend?
    Please contact the Outdoor Adventure office at (713) 743-9512 prior to 48 hours of the event. If you do not attend without notification, you will not be permitted to enroll in OA Clinics for one month. No refunds will be granted due to the $10 processing fee.
