Dropping and Withdrawing Courses Related to Hurricane Harvey

Please see below for a list of academic deadlines and frequently asked questions related to the academic schedule impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Students are encouraged to contact their professors for any questions regarding due dates and assignments. Please check Blackboard and your UH email address for messages from your instructors. We encourage you to email enrollmentservices@uh.edu prior to dropping or withdrawing from class enrollment. Faculty and staff are committed to accommodating students during this difficult time as they transition back to school.

Cougar Emergency Fund

The Cougar Emergency Fund is a grant administered through the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services (DSAES), established through the generous gifts of alumni and friends of the University of Houston. It provides current students with assistance when an extraordinary need is identified or students find themselves dealing with a personal or family emergency which creates uncertainty in being able to meet the costs associated

Assignment Deadlines and Class Time

See below for a message from Provost Short regarding assignment deadlines and class time:

"The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has issued a ruling that universities impacted by Harvey will not be required to make up missed days during the time that a university was officially closed. In our case, Friday, August 25, 2017, 1 p.m. through Tuesday, September 5th, 2017, 8 a.m. As such, we will not extend the fall 2017 semester and any cancelled classes or class assignments missed during this time period will not need to be made up. You will be able to complete all the courses for which you are registered and can do so on time. Faculty are being asked to be flexible and use online and other alternative strategies to provide you a quality course without adding additional face-time instruction which would require lengthening the semester."

What are the New Deadlines for Enrollment, Financial Aid, Etc.?

Last Days to Drop and Add Classes

The official deadline for adding (with the approval of your academic advisor) and dropping a class (on your own) was Friday, September 8, 2017.  However, given the potential impact of Hurricane Harvey on UH students, the university considered exceptions to the add/drop deadline through Friday, September 15, 2017. The deadline to request an exception to add/drop courses expired on Friday, September 15, 2017.

  • Drops - Students can drop a course but with a "W" via myUH until October 31, 2017 for the regular fall session.
  • Add - Students may add courses for sessions 4, 5, and 6 of the fall semester via myUH.

Amended Deadlines and Due Dates:

  • Last Day to Add: Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017
  • University's Official Reporting Day (ORD): Friday, Sept. 8, 2017
  • Last Day to Drop without a grade: Friday, Sept. 8, 2017
  • Last Day to Drop with a W: Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017 (no change)
  • Last Day to Submit Residency Application and Documents: Friday, Sept. 8, 2017
  • Last Day to Arrange a Payment Plan: Friday, Sept. 8, 2017
  • Last Day to Enroll in an Emergency Payment Plan: Friday, Sept. 8, 2017
  • Due Date for the second payment installment has been extended to Monday, Oct. 16, 2017

If you have not yet applied for financial aid for the fall semester, it is not too late. Simply go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov to complete the application.

Will the Deadline for Withdrawals Be Extended?

We encourage any student considering withdrawal to contact enrollmentservices@uh.edu prior to taking such action. We are committed to accommodating students during this difficult time as they transition back to school.

The deadline for withdrawal with a 70% refund for session 1 of the Fall semester was extended to September 8, 2017. 

The deadlines for 50% and 25% refunds were extended an additional week from the original respective deadlines. 

Regarding session 3, the deadline for withdrawal with a 50% refund was extended to September 8, 2017.
