Visiting Assistant Professor - UH Energy Law Scholar - Non-Tenure-Track

Description:

The University of Houston Law Center (UHLC) invites applications for an energy law scholar (ELS) position for the academic year of 2012-2013.

This is a full-time, non-tenure track position that will accrue no time toward tenure at the University of Houston. This position carries with it no expectation of renewal beyond the specified time period. Continued appointment is contingent upon required approvals, an annual review, the availability of funding, and a continued need for the position within the Law Center.

The position's goal is to help prepare highly qualified candidates for a career as a law professor and affords the opportunity to gain both teaching experience and devote substantial time to research, writing, and other scholarly pursuits. ELS positions are not tenure-track positions and time in rank does not apply toward tenure at UHLC. Faculty appointed typically teach one course per semester (no teaching required during initial Fall semester) and participate fully in the academic life of the UHLC community. They enjoy access to the resources of the library and its staff, and may also engage student research assistants, which both advances their research and gives students the opportunity to participate in the development of innovative scholarship. Additionally, there will be a budget for research and travel to support scholarly activities.

Applicants must have a J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent if not trained in the law in the U.S.) and educational or practical experience with energy law, where experience with electricity or oil and gas aspects of energy law are favored. Practical experience as a lawyer in the energy law areas given in this paragraph are also preferred but not required.

Those appointed to the energy law scholar position are not precluded from applying for tenure track positions at UHLC. However, an ELS appointment garners no consideration of such application in any way different from any other applicant.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $65,000 for the 9-month academic year, beginning in the Fall of 2012. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plan participation, and sick leave in accordance with university policy.

The Law Center’s Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Center:

Of particular interest for the ELS position is the Law Center’s Environment, Energy and Natural Resources (EENR) Center. The EENR Center provides a forum for education and discussion concerning important issues of the day, such as climate change, air pollution, clean coal and renewable energy.
