Assistant or Associate Professor - Industrial Design - Tenure-Track
The Industrial Design program at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, University of Houston seeks a full time, tenure track faculty member recognized as both a prolific academic researcher and an expert in design research in professional practice beginning August, 2014. The appointed faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, work with the Director of the Industrial Design program in developing curriculum while pursuing an agenda of high profile design research, writing and creative production.
Houston, the nation's fourth largest city, is the world capital of the energy, medical, and aerospace industries where new startup companies and entrepreneurships flourish with creative talents. The University of Houston is a leading public university recognized as one of three Tier One research public universities in Texas by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2011. The college invites innovative designers/scholars to help spearhead the growth of the design program with new graduate program and to develop synergistic relationships with other disciplines within the College of Architecture, the university, the community, and corporations.
Qualified candidates must have a master degree, or higher, in industrial design (MFA, MIID, MS, PhD) or a related discipline with a significant record of scholarly and creative work. Excellence in design may be demonstrated through a proven track record as an inspired practitioner, educator and/or researcher. Candidates should possess a strong background and advanced knowledge of contemporary professional practices in one or more of the following areas: product development, design research, design strategy, design for emerging technologies, and design history and theory.
The appointee will be required to contribute to teaching undergraduate and graduate industrial Design courses, act as student adviser and supervisor to groups and individual students. The faculty member will be expected to participate in curriculum development, engage in academic and professional community service, and work collaboratively with internal and external research partners, organizations, and corporations.
