Stationery
Attention: This section has been amended to reflect updates associated with the new UH stationery becoming available Oct. 1, 2010.
University of Houston is changing to new letterhead, envelopes and business card formats to reflect the new UH branding. Having a consistent and professional look on all university stationery communicates a unified message to these audiences and reiterates the traditional colors and symbols that give our university its unique identity. The University of Houston Branding Committee, in conjunction with UH Printing & Postal and UH Marketing & Communication, have diligently reviewed options for the University of Houston stationery and business cards. Representatives from each college and most major business units have been consulted on details of design and format, with special attention paid to cost effectiveness and the varying needs of faculty, research faculty and staff. The branding committee recommends two versions of stationery and business cards for UH constituents to choose from. Both versions are described below and can be downloaded. These are in line with best practices for branding and graphic identity at public research universities.
After Sept. 1, 2010, all colleges and departments will be asked to use only the new logos in all marketing, communication and correspondence.
All university stationery was developed by the UH Branding Committee and is printed by the University of Houston Printing Services department, a professional printing facility that is available to the entire UH community. Our stationery features a watermarked paper stock specially created for the university.
In order to maintain consistency and make the process of ordering stationery as easy as possible, UH Printing Services features templates for all of your stationery needs. These templates have both set design elements and blank fields where you can customize information. All you need to do in most cases is provide the correct text to fill in the blanks.
Please review the following policies for using UH Stationery:
- All University of Houston departments and colleges need to use new stationery after Sept. 1, 2010 in order to present a unified brand identity to all audiences. It is recommended that colleges, departments and business units recycle unused supplies of old stationery.
- Use of the “Houston's Carnegie Designated Tier One Public Research University.” tagline is optional for all faculty and staff – it may be included or omitted at the discretion of the department or faculty member. Other taglines cannot be used in place of “Houston's Carnegie Designated Tier One Public Research University.”
- Only the "new" University of Houston logotype can be used on the stationery. Please do not use alternate logotypes, the interlocking UH athletics mark or UH seal.
- As of Sept. 1, 2010, only the newer college, department and program logos are permitted for use in the appropriate space in the lower left corner of the letterhead. Older style logos that are not in line with current UH branding are no longer permitted.
- Recommended placement for college and department logos on business cards is on the reverse (back) side of cards. For cards with additional logos or other text, the reverse side of cards is white rather than red.
- Only the University of Houston logotype can be printed on envelopes.
Following are examples of the types of stationery available through Printing Services and the information needed to complete your order. If you would like to order some stationery please visit the UH Printing & Postal website or call 713-743-5900. If you have questions about the official UH stationery, please call University Marketing at 713-743-8383 or e-mail at adapproval@uh.edu.

Letterhead
The University of Houston letterhead templates are designed to offer flexibility while maintaining consistency. A number of text fields are provided to allow you to include as much or as little information as you prefer. The UH Branding Committee offers two “suites” of stationery for use by all UH faculty & staff.
Letterhead Suite 1 is designed for clinical and research faculty, as well as selected program and department directors or chairpersons. These individuals have expressed a need to include additional information in their stationery, including but not limited to clinical credentials and affiliations, grant programs and special program funding, research affiliations and more. This stationery suite provides a left-hand “column” where information can be readily accommodated in a professional manner, while still supporting our “One University” branding concept.
Download a Letterhead Suite 1 sample here.
Letterhead Suite 2 is arranged flush left and with many of the same styling cues as Letterhead Suite 1, but without the left-hand column, and therefore fewer text fields for titles and affiliations. Fields for general contact information are placed toward the bottom of the letterhead, and there is more space for text in this letter style. The design meets the needs of faculty and staff who compose large volumes of letters for purposes of admissions, development and business, and makes it far less likely that a “typical letter” would extend to a second page. Although it is somewhat different than Letterhead Suite 1, it is similar enough in design that it matches the official stationery envelopes and business cards.
Download a Letterhead Suite 2 sample here.
When printing letters and memos on the new letterhead, it is recommended to use a half-inch margin on the top, bottom, and both sides of the sheet for the best results.
If your department or college already has new letterhead and you need information about formatting your document, please download the formatting instructions on PDF.
Please provide the following information in typed or printed format:
- College
- Department or office name
- Complete official street address
- City, state, and ZIP code (including the additional four-digit numbers)
- Phone number
- Fax number
- Web and/or E-mail address (optional)
If possible, please provide printed samples of previous letterhead. If you would like to order some letterhead, please visit the UH Printing & Postal website
or call 713-743-5900.
Business Cards
The UH Branding Committee agreed to offer only two business card designs, each with three options for the back of the card. The design matches the letterhead, but offers options for including clinic appointment times, alternate credentials and affiliations or alternate language translations. All information on the business card is left aligned.
Only the "new" University of Houston logotype can be used on the stationery, including both the front and back of the business card. Please do not use alternate or older logotypes or the interlocking UH heritage mark. As of Sept. 1, 2010, only the newer college, department and program logos are permitted for use in the appropriate space on the in the lower left corner of the business card. The format on the front of the business cards may not be changed.
Please provide the following information in typed or printed format:
- Name and title (twenty six characters per line maximum, including degree initials)
- College
- Department or office name
- Complete official street address
- City, State, and ZIP code (including the additional four-digit numbers)
- Phone number, fax number, E-mail (five lines maximum)
Business Card Version 1 features a two-column design that breaks up the text fields across the space of the card, giving it a more modern, edgy look.
See Business Card Version 1 sample here.
Business Card Version 2 features the University of Houston logo more prominently. This feature was particularly well received by the UH Branding Committee because it is more traditional and allows more information to be included on the card where necessary.
See Business Card Version 2 sample here.
Back of Business Cards (Version 1 & 2)
The options for the back of the business card include:
- Option 1: the back of the card is solid white with no printing
- Option 2: the back of the card is solid white with ""Houston's Carnegie Designated Tier One Public Research University" in red.
- Option 3: the back of the card is white with one of the following types of text:
- Admissions and counseling schedule
- Faculty and staff member information in an alternate language (same business card information, translated)
- College and department logos ONLY in the new brand style
Additional options for the back of the business cards may be considered and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Any exceptions or special cases must be approved by the Associate Vice Chancellor/Associate Vice President for UH Marketing & Communication.
Printing on the back of the card is limited to black print on a white background only. Logos are limited to official University of Houston logos executed in the new branding style. No other non-text images will be considered. Fully customized cards are not available. The limitations on the back of the card are made in the interest of cost savings.
Prices on the new business cards are as follows:

- Option 2 (white back): $54 for 500 qty.
- Option 3 (printed back): $64 for 500 qty.

Student Calling Cards/Business Cards
Due to numerous requests for business cards (also known as calling cards) from students and from faculty & staff members that advise students and student groups, UH Marketing & Communication and UH Creation Station have teamed up to offer Student Calling Cards. In the current job market, students are encouraged to have business cards among the tools they use to represent themselves as they network and search for career and research opportunities. Since it is not appropriate for students to use the business cards and other items from the official University of Houston stationery (as they are still students and not university employees), Student Calling Cards are available from UH Creation Station that are specifically designed for the needs of students.
The Calling Card templates were designed to present a straightforward, clean and professional look that upholds the University of Houston Graphic Standards.
Student Calling Cards can be purchased at UH Creation Station in the University Center.
Please review the following policies for using UH Student Calling Cards:
- The UH Student Calling Card templates are the only calling cards or business cards for student that are recognized by the University of Houston.
- Students may not use the official University of Houston business cards or any business card produced in the likeness of the official UH stationery as the official stationery is for use by UH faculty and staff only.
- Student Calling Cards can be purchased at UH Creation Station in the University Center. The student requesting the cards is responsible for all costs associated with producing their cards, per UH Creation Station. Contact Creation Station at uccs@uh.edu or visit the website at www.uh.edu/uccs/content.html.
- UH Creation Station requires a minimum order of 250 cards and at least 7 working days to produce each order.
- Any change that deviates from the templates need to be approved by UH Marketing & Communication before being printed. Contact UH Marketing & Communication at adapproval@uh.edu.
- Only official University of Houston logotypes can be used on the front of the cards.
- Other information that may be printed on the front of the Student Calling Card includes the following:
- the student’s name in bold letters
- a description of their degree and/or graduation date with an optional field to list any specialty area associated with their degree (accounting, etc.)
- the student’s address (optional)
- the student’s phone number(s)
- the student’s email addresses
- up to two URL’s – it is highly recommended that students only include websites that directly correlate to their profession, such a Linked-in account, a website about pertinent research projects, or professional website displaying work the student has generated
- Students may leave the back of the Calling Card blank to save on costs or they may print on of the following types of information:
- The student may reproduce their contact information in an alternate language, which may be important for international students, students majoring in a foreign language programs or international studies programs.
- The student may list additional contact information such as phone numbers; email addresses, websites, or social networking accounts (with or without icons) such as twitter, Linked In or Facebook accounts. Students are advised to only include accounts and information that directly correlate to their profession.
- Students may opt to print logos correlating to student groups or professional organizations they are members of. Students may be asked to provide image files and proof from the organization that they have permission to use the logos. Logos cannot be re-created for use on calling cards.
- If a student has other pieces of information they would like to include on their calling card, they need to work with UH Creation Station to request approval from UH Marketing & Communication through adapproval@uh.edu. It is advised that students only include information that that directly correlates to their profession.
