The University of Houston Department of Public Safety recommends registering bicycles for use on campus. Our officers regularly confiscate bicycles from theft. Unless a stolen bicycle has been registered with UHDPS or the owner reports it stolen, we do not have a way to return a confiscated bicycle to its rightful owner. Also, unable to contact the rightful owner, UHDPS cannot charge a suspect for theft.
Registering a bicycle with the University of Houston Department of Public Safety provides three methods to identify the rightful owner of a bicycle: we will be able to identify the owner by (1) the registration sticker, (2) bicycle's serial number, or (3) optional engraved ID number.
If you report your bicycle stolen and UHDPS has your registration information, we can enter that information into the National Crime Information Center database of stolen articles. This database is available to more than 50,000 police departments nationwide and is queried more than 14,000,000 times a day for stolen property. When you register your bicycle, not only are UHDPS officers working to recover your bicycle, but thousands of officers across the county will be helping, too.
Registering Your Bicycle
Registering your bicycle is easy.
Step 1: Bring your bicycle to the Police Station (see map).
Step 2: We collect your contact information, affix a registration sticker on the bicycle, record the serial number of the bicycle, and optionally engrave an identification number on the bicycle. This information is entered into our database for cross referencing.
Be sure to properly secure your bicycle after you've registered it!
