The two tile murals installed last month at Cougar Village II may seem familiar to some. There’s a reason why.

The two unnamed pieces had flanked the exterior of the old Cougar Place at the corner of Wheeler and Cullen since 1985. Created by artist Malou Flato, they remained at Cougar Place until plans were created to tear down and rebuild the residential facility. So in 2012, they were removed and stored, with plans for them to find a new home at Cougar Village II.

They remained in storage for nearly two years, allowing the new Cougar Village II facility to be built. In January, they were brought out of storage and installed on the exterior walls in the outdoor courtyard area.

The large-scale, hand-painted tile murals depict groups of people gathering for some type of outdoor event.

"We are delighted the murals have a new home on campus and will be seen in a fresh new light," said Michael Guidry, the curator of the Public Art Collection for the University of Houston System.
