University of Houston Receives Board Approval of Multi-Million Dollar Construction Projects


On December 15, 2009, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the following projects:

  • Stadium Parking Garage
  • Central Plant Expansion
  • Classroom and Business Building Phase 1
  • Science Engineering and Research Center (SERC) Build Out - Phase 3
  • Moody Dining Towers Renovation
  • UH Victoria Purchase of 2705 Houston Highway

The Stadium Parking Garage, a $26M project, will be the third parking structure to be built on the UH campus and will add at least 2,400 spaces, and 10,000 gross square feet of mixed development. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2010 with completion expected in August 2011.

The Central Plant Expansion is a $45.1M project that will add approximately 10,244 square feet to the west end of the existing Central Plant. It will include the addition of three 2,500 ton chillers, one new cooling tower cell, and replace existing cooling towers. The Central Plant Expansion will provide the capacity to meet future building needs in support of the Framework Plan, Tier One Research, and increased on-campus housing. Construction is set to begin in March 2010 with completion scheduled for March 2013.

The Classroom and Business Building is a $31M project that will happen in several phases. The initial phase includes the construction of a four-story 112,723 gross square foot facility which will include classrooms and academic space on the first two levels and shell space on the upper levels. The construction start date is August 2010 with completion anticipated in December 2011.

The third phase of the build out of the Science Engineering and Research Center will include HVAC upgrades, finishing out the east portion of the fifth and third floors for the chemistry, biochemistry, and bioengineering programs. This $12M project starts construction in February 2010. Completion is set for October 2010.

Renovation of Moody Towers Dining Hall will include replacement of the current dining furniture, interior finishes, lighting, and kitchen equipment, as well as mechanical and electrical systems. This $11M project will begin construction in May 2010 and will be complete in August 2010. 

The University of Houston-Victoria was granted approval to purchase and renovate a 226-unit Howard Johnson hotel that's located approximately three blocks from campus. The facility will be converted into a facility that will serve a number of purposes including a Student Welcome Center, Student Services, Career Services, Counseling, Student Employment, multipurpose meeting rooms, and a student residence hall, dining facility and catering service. This $9M project will begin renovating in January 2010; completion is scheduled for January 2011.
