University Center Transformation Construction to Begin
Construction will start this month on the new University Center with mobilization beginning on May 29, 2012. The transformation project will be completed in two construction phases. Phase I of construction will comprise of: the expansion of the University Center (565) on the east side into parking lot 1E; relocation of utility lines in affected areas; demolition of the University Underground; and construction on the new University Center North (487). This phase will conclude in December of 2013 with occupancy scheduled in early January 2014. New food service spaces, the UH Bookstore, the enclosed arbor and associated lounge spaces, and the new theater will all be in service upon completion of the first phase.
Phase II of construction will follow immediately and is expected to be completed in December 2014. Phase II includes the renovation of the existing University Center administrative, meeting, and retail spaces.
Site mobilization will be executed in two stages for Phase I and will be coordinated with the availability and scheduled change of services at the University Center. Stage 1 fencing will go up around UC Underground starting May 29, 2012. By June 4, 2012, temporary food services for the 18-month duration will be available nearby. Starting on June 25, 2012 and continuing for two weeks, crews will be working on Calhoun Road about 150 feet north of University Drive to make a median cut to facilitate a new left-turn access into Lot 1E, which will be the construction entrance for the entire construction period. On or about July 9, 2012 the new lot entrance will be complete and fencing will be installed around parking lot 1E, with the exception of areas just east of Melcher Hall, as indicated on the map below.
The first map shows Stage 1 fenced site limits from June 4, 2012 through July 5, 2012. Stage 1 fence set-up begins May 29, 2012 and ends July 4, 2012. The second map shows Stage 2 fenced site limits from July 9, 2012 through December 2013. Stage 2 fence set-up begins July 5, 2012 and construction ends December 2013.
