The University of Houston Philosophy Department
With an active research faculty working primarily in the analytic tradition, our department has been ranked among the top eight MA progams in the country. Faculty members have published several books in recent years (with Oxford, Cambridge, and Penn State Press), as well as articles in highly-ranked journals (such as The Philosophical Review and The Journal of Philosophy) on a broad range of topics: epistemology, metaphysics, ethics and political philosophy, philosophy of language, cognitive science, logic, aesthetics, philosophy of religion, history of philosophy, history and philosophy of science. Members of the faculty are also regularly represented on programs at philosophy meetings, such as those of the American Philosophical Association, the American Society for Aesthetics, Amantaphil, and the Society for Philosophy and Psychology.
Our mission includes the education of both MA students and undergraduate majors, and many undergraduates take courses in our department to satisfy the University's core requirements. Most of our MA students enter the program with the expectation of eventually going on to a PhD program in philosophy, and our department regularly places students in strong PhD programs. Our department offers a variety of opportunities for research in areas within and closely related to philosophy. Groups and programs in which various faculty members participate, and which may be of interest to prospective students, include:
Several members of the department are also affiliated with the University's Honors College and are active in a number of programs for undergraduates, including two new intensive programs, the Medicine and Society Program and the Politics, Ethics, and Society Program.
