Phi Beta Delta

President's Report

Greetings Delta Iotans:

On behalf of the Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Delta, I welcome you to the 2010-2011 academic year. As President of our chapter, I thank you for your support and your interest in promoting international education and scholarship and in building one of the best Phi Beta Delta chapters in the nation. Phi Beta Delta is the only honor society whose sole purpose is to recognize accomplishments in international education and scholarship and to encourage international initiatives among students, faculty, and staff at the University of Houston. I am looking forward to working with you and to hearing from you. Any suggestions and comments to improve our chapter are welcome.

We call your attention to International Education Week to be observed around the world during the week of November 15 through 19, 2010. Many exciting events are being planned for the University of Houston campus by the International Education Week Planning Committee, chaired by Anita Gaines, Director of International Student and Scholar Services, who also serves as our chapter coordinator. Join us in celebrating the great importance of international educational exchange.

As is our tradition, members of our chapter are now going about the business of selling Entertainment Books as a fundraising project. I quote Marian Newman, Chair of the Fundraising Committee: “I would like to ask every Delta Iota chapter member to purchase at least one book for her/himself, ~ or ~ sell at least one book for our organization's fundraiser.” Our sale will continue until the end of the fall semester (December 17th) . Members can contact Marian Newman at mnewman@uh.edu or Dale Hamilton at dhamilton@uh.edu for information on purchasing the books, and a direct link is http://www.entertainment.com/discount/home.shtml.

Delta Iota members will have the opportunity to submit nominations for national Phi Beta Delta awards. The Governing Board of our chapter would like to receive all nominations by December 6 in order to meet the national organization deadline of December 14. We will have more information about the nomination process at the International Scholars Reception. Meanwhile, we invite you to visit http://www.phibetadelta.org/index.php/awards.html for more immediate information.

Jyoti Cameron, our member-at-large on the Board, is in the process of organizing “No-Host Dinners” to which all our members are invited. We simply choose a restaurant and meet there, and we each pick up our own tab. This is another tradition of our chapter and one that we find to be great fun. We invite you to enjoy the company of your friends and colleagues in this exciting field. These dinners are a great way for us to get to know each other better. The next “No-Host Dinner” will be announced to the membership via email soon. Join us for great food and great conversation.

Please take a few minutes to note upcoming opportunities and events:
As part of International Education Week in the United States (November 15-19), we invite you to an International Scholars Reception honoring the research of international scholars, Fulbright and exchange students, and outstanding study abroad programs at the University of Houston.

CALL FOR PAPERS/ABSTRACTS
25th Annual Meeting and International Awareness Conference

March 31-April 1, 2011, Long Beach, CA

NAVIGATING THE SEAS OF CHANGE:
25 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND SCHOLARSHIP

The 25th Annual Meeting brings us back again to Long Beach, CA, where the Society has its roots. The Alpha Chapter at California State University Long Beach and the nearby Beta Chapter at California State University Fullerton are hosting the event to be held at the beautiful Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, Thursday March 31 and Friday April 1, 2011.

We encourage submissions representing all areas of study that promote global awareness through a range of programs and experiences. The increasing interest in international opportunities and promotion of scholarship in this shrinking world create new challenges. We hope that this conference will provide an environment where students, staff, faculty and interested groups can highlight their efforts.

There will be several formats for submission to select from:
  • Full papers that are intended for publication in the Conference Proceedings, a special edition of the Medallion. We will schedule oral summaries of approximately fifteen minutes to allow authors to highlight significant aspects of their work that may be described in more detail in the publication.
  • Short papers for oral presentations of approximately fifteen minutes.
  • Poster presentations, either as physical posters or as PowerPoint presentations presented in a large room format on Friday afternoon, April 1, to encourage participation, especially on the part of students. Awards will be given out for the best student presentations in this event.
Instructions for Authors: For all formats described above, authors should download the Abstract Submission Form (MS Word), to be made available on the web site, www.phibetadelta.org and submit the following information :
  • title of presentation
  • name(s) of author(s), along with title(s)
  • institutional/organizational affiliation
  • postal address, (5) phone number(s)
  • email address, and
  • a short abstract (300 words maximum). The level should be appropriate for a non-specialist reader.
Please submit these items electronically to jdelosreyes@uh.edu by December 15, 2010. Submissions will be acknowledged via email. Abstracts of accepted submissions will be posted on the Society's website after the conclusion of the conference. For those submitting full papers to be considered for publication in the Conference Proceedings, the final version will be due March 1, 2011.

Additional information regarding registration and other details will be posted on the website shortly at www.phibetadelta.org.
