Phi Beta Delta

Dear Delta Iota Chapter Members:

On behalf of the Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Delta, I thank you for your support of our chapter and its promotions and activities throughout this academic year. Support of international education has never been more important, and Phi Beta Delta offers us a unique opportunity for us to provide that support.

Phi Beta Delta is the first honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. The Society, founded at California State University, Long Beach in 1986, was established as a national organization with 38 chartered chapters in 1987, and has grown to become an international society with over 135 chapters.

The Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Delta was established at the University of Houston on May 1, 1998. With members composed of faculty, staff, and students, we are actively involved in service and programming to promote internationalization at the University of Houston.

We hope to continue to build our chapter and to increase our support of international students. We are now seeking nominations for new members, and we encourage and appreciate your assistance in submitting names of individuals who meet the membership criteria. We are very fortunate this year to be able to offer discounts of $25.00 toward membership to the first twenty students who apply. The deadline for the discounted applications is set for March 11. We also encourage all current members to renew memberships. We look forward to having new and renewing members join us in the good and important work of our dynamic and growing honor society.

Membership Criteria:

  • Distinguished academic faculty and staff who have been involved in recognized international endeavors such as teaching, conducting research, participating in overseas projects, administering exchange programs, or providing services to international students and scholars.

  • International and permanent resident students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement (3.5 GPA for graduates and 3.2 GPA for students in the professional schools and upper division undergraduates) and who have been actively involved in promoting international understanding at the University of Houston, or other settings.

  • U.S. students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement (3.5 GPA for graduates and 3.2 GPA for students in the professional schools and upper division undergraduates) and who have been actively involved in promoting international understanding at the University of Houston, or other settings, and who have either conducted research abroad or had comparable international experience where academic relevance can be demonstrated to the University.

Please submit your nominations and your membership renewal on the forms found at www.uh.edu/phibetadelta/forms.htm. For additional information, please contact Anita Gaines, Chapter Coordinator, at 713-743-5071.

We cordially invite you to our Annual Induction Ceremony, which will take place on April 21, 2011, from 4:00 to 6:00 p. m. in the Rockwell Pavilion of the M. D. Anderson Library. Mark your calendars and plan to join as we induct new members into our society.
