The
University of Houston College of Pharmacy has facilities both
on the University of Houston campus and, since 1980, in the world-renowned
Texas Medical Center (TMC). At TMC, students have the opportunity
to train with physicians, medical students and members of our
clinical faculty. In addition to faculty and staff offices, TMC
also houses research laboratories, classrooms and the Contemporary
Pharmacy Practice Laboratory. In the laboratory, students learn
techniques in pharmaceutical care by role-playing situations they
will experience as pharmacists. TMC also is home to another laboratory,
the Sterile Products Laboratory, which teaches students the latest
techniques in the preparation of sterile products and the use
of related equipment. From this campus, students have the benefit
of accessing the Texas Medical Center Library, which is one of
the leading biomedical libraries in the United States.
Students
receive their basic pharmaceutical science education on the UH
campus. At the Texas Medical Center they are instructed in contemporary
pharmacy practice and are provided training through structured
experiences in hospital, clinical, chain and community pharmacy
practice.
Pharmacy
students participate in clerkships and externships at Texas Medical
Center hospitals, 30 community hospitals in the surrounding metropolitan
areas and numerous other institutions throughout the state.
College
faculty research and program initiatives include cardiovascular
studies, transdermal drug delivery, neuropharmacology, signal
transduction mechanisms, aging and exercise, infectious disease
protocols, and patient counseling and compliance.
