Community Pharmacy
PHAR 5693
Course Description:
A structured pharmacy experience in community and ambulatory practice
stressing management and prescription dispensing functions, patient
counseling, and over-the-counter medication.
Cr. 6. (0-18).
Prerequisite:
Fourth year standing in the College of Pharmacy or consent of
the instructor.
Course Proficiencies:
The student will be able to:
- Collect, assimilate, interpret, and input
patient specific data into a patient care management database.
- Determine patient needs, and select or
recommend appropriate OTC products.
- Using an evidenced-based approach, evaluate
a request for herbal, neutraceutical, or other alternative healthcare
product and provide appropriate information and recommendation.
- Assist in CPR and first aid treatment
in an emergency.
- Provide disease prevention and health maintenance
information to the public.
- Review, interpret, evaluate, and dispense
prescriptions or medication orders.
- Perform calculations necessary to assure
proper quantities for reconstituting or compounding prescriptions.
- Upon prescription or medication order,
compound products that are accurate and suitable for dispensing.
- Interview a patient to determine patient
needs, or problems with drug therapy.
- Utilize patient assessment parameters
needed to monitor drug therapy and identify beneficial and adverse
outcomes.
- Orally or in writing, present a patient
case to a physician or other healthcare provider in a concise
manner so that therapeutic problems are communicated and intervention
completed.
- Communicate with a patient and provide
counseling that assures understanding and promotes compliance.
- Identify, retrieve, interpret and evaluate
drug information used in community pharmacy.
- Practice pharmacy in compliance with all
Federal and State laws.
- Direct supportive personnel in filing
claims for third party payment of prescriptions.
- Analyze and predict the effects of changes
in costs, prices or revenues on pharmacy profits.
- Efficiently manage time of self and supportive
personnel.
- Perform prospective drug utilization review.
- Implement procedures that provide drug
security, storage, and control.
- Implement pharmaceutical care in the community
pharmacy setting.
- Maintain appropriate documentation for
products dispensed and pharmaceutical care services provided.
