Nuclear Pharmacy
PHAR 5687

Course Description: Clinical pharmaceutical health care experience with patients undergoing nuclear pharmacy treatments.

Cr. 6. (0-18)

Prerequisite: Fourth year standing in the College of Pharmacy or consent of the instructor.

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

1. Calculate accurately all doses of radiopharmaceuticals, utilizing pharmacokinetic principles and techniques.
2. Compound products used in Nuclear Pharmacy.
3. Demonstrate appropriate compounding techniques and handling of radiopharmaceuticals.
4. Monitor drug therapy for achievable therapeutic outcomes in a patient receiving a nuclear medicine product.
5. Analyze and resolve problems with medications when they occur a patient receiving a nuclear medicine product.
6. Describe issues related to use of nuclear medicine products including:
a. side effects
b. toxicities
c. potential complications.
7. Provide effective consultation to nuclear medicine and radiology practitioners concerning:
a. appropriateness of agents
b. pharmacokinetics
c. side effects
d. toxicities
e. contraindications
8. Educate patients, when applicable, concerning their drug therapy, side effects, and toxicities.
9. Monitor patients receiving radiopharmaceuticals and write complete progress notes concerning each patient.
10. Participate in discussions concerning treatments or diagnostic tools for a specific patient.
11. Provide drug information to health care providers concerning radiopharmaceuticals.
12. Discuss and list quality control measures used in nuclear pharmacy.
13. For Multi-channel and Single channel analyzers, describe
a. How they are used
b. Their calibration
c. Their efficiency
14. Discuss how various radiopharmaceuticals are used in diagnostic procedures.
15. Apply radiation safety concerning transport and receipt of radioactive materials.
16. Calculate exposure readings from portable survey meters.
17. Describe three properties of radiation.
18. Define:
a. ALARA and discuss three ways to keep ALARA.
b. RSO
19. List the different agencies and rules that govern nuclear pharmacies.
