Course Description:
A structured pharmacy experience in an institutional setting dealing
with oncology patients.
Cr. 6. (0-18)
Prerequisite:
Fourth year standing in the College of Pharmacy or consent of
the instructor.
Course Proficiencies:
The student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the pathophysiology,
clinical presentation, complications, prognosis and treatment
of the following cancers:
a. Leukemia
b. Breast cancer
c. Gastrointestinal malignancies
d. Head and neck cancer
e. Pediatric malignancies
f. Lymphoma
g. Lung cancer
h. Gynecological malignancies
i. Skin cancer and melanoma
j. Brain Tumors
k. Multiple myeloma
l. Genitourinary cancers
m. Endocrine tumors
n. Sarcomas
2. Calculate Body Surface Area (BSA) and determine the dose of
chemotherapeutic agents.
3. Recommend non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments
for the following :
a. Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting
b. Mouth care
c. Acute and chronic pain control
d. Constipation/Diarrhea
4. Evaluate and interpret laboratory data with respect to the
oncology patient.
5. Recommend preventive and therapeutic measures for infectious
diseases common in oncology patients.
6. Recommend appropriate measures to prevent extravasation and
any other complications relating to administration of chemotherapeutic
agents.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of the process of preparing and distributing
investigational drugs.
8. Design and recommend an antifungal/antibiotic plan for all
febrile patients including febrile neutropenic patients; febrile
non-neutropenic patients, and continued febrile/neutropenic patients
after antibiotics.
9. Recommend a treatment and monitoring regimen for Tumor Lysis
Syndrome.
10. Modify counseling techniques for the special emotional needs
of the cancer patient.
11. Provide written and verbal drug information to patients and
health care professionals, concerning approved and investigational
agents.
12. Present an inservice on a topic related to oncology pharmacy
practice.
13. Participate in the interdisciplinary care of oncology patients.
14. Recommend a treatment plan for nutritional support for an
oncology patient.
15. Recommend treatment for the fluid and electrolyte management
of an oncology patient.
16. Demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate use, indications,
adverse side effects and toxicology for the following classes
of drugs:
a. Alkylating agents
b. Antimetabolites
c. Biological response modifiers
d. Vinca alkaloids
e. Hormonal agents
f. Anthracyclines
17. Evaluate and interpret current literature with respect to
oncology patients.
18. Counsel patients and their caregivers about the treatment
regimen.
19. Recommend a plan outlining the protocol, prophylactic medications,
and monitoring parameters for a patient undergoing bone marrow
transplantation.
20. Maintain patient profile with current laboratory data, medications
and appropriate flowsheets.
