Course Description: A structured pharmacy experience dealing with management issues in pharmacy administration.

Cr. 6. (0-18)

Prerequisite: Fourth year standing in the College of Pharmacy or consent of the instructor.

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

1. Describe the qualities desired when hiring employees.
2. Describe the pharmacy’s process for assuring equal opportunity employment, lack of discrimination, and an appropriate work environment.
3. Discuss the hiring process for pharmacy personnel.
4. Describe the management philosophy of the pharmacy.
5. Prepare a complete monthly schedule for all pharmacists and support staff.
6. Describe the drug-distribution system(s) for the pharmacy.
7. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a decentralized vs. centralized pharmacy.
8. Describe the integration on distributive and clinical responsibilities in the pharmaceutical care provided by the hospital’s pharmacists.
9. Describe the automation systems used by the pharmacy.
10. Perform a control substance inventory and describe when one is required by TSBP.
11. Perform a physical inventory.
12. Determine and maintain inventory controls for the ordering process.
13. Recognize areas where “loss” can occur and develop ways to eliminate “loss”.
14. Prepare an annual budget for the pharmacy.
15. Describe the “returns” procedures for expired drugs.
16. Write a policy for the policy and procedures manual.
17. Discuss customer relations/customer service and create a model for good relations.
18. Develop and Implement a clinical service for the pharmacy.
19. Develop and complete a drug use evaluation (DUE).
20. Handle “Conflict Management/Resolution” i.e. between staff, physicians, patients, etc.
21. Describe procedures for due process, discipline, and dismissal of an employee.
22. Maintain pharmacy records in accordance with TSBP rules.
23. Describe the requirements and responsibilities for the Pharmacist in Charge (PIC).
24. Define “Continuous quality improvement (CQI).”
25. Develop and implement a CQI study to assess a pharmacy service.
26. Describe the systems the pharmacy uses to prevent, identify, and correct medication errors.
27. Understand laws and rules regarding the ordering, receiving, and handling of CII drugs.
