Pharmacoeconomics
PHAR 5661

Course Description: A structured pharmacy experience in a practice setting stressing pharmacoeconomic and cost-benefit issues.

Cr. 6. (0-18)

Prerequisite: Fourth year standing in the College of Pharmacy or consent of the instructor.

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the current structure of health care in the United States.
  2. Discuss the changes expected for the future of health care in the United States.
  3. Describe pharmaoeconomic methodologies:
    a. Cost-benefit
    b. Cost-effectiveness
    c. Cost-minimimization
    d. Cost-utility
  4. Develop a decision tree.
  5. Describe severity classifications used in comparing outcomes of patients.
  6. Develop measurable patient outcomes to determine the benefits of a clinical service.
  7. Define the traditional endpoints of clinical trials.
  8. Discuss shifting outcomes and why occurring: Impact on disease vs. Impact on health.
  9. Give examples of, define and describe the outcome measurements for:
    a. Clinical outcomes
    b. Economic outcomes
    c. Humanistic outcomes
  10. Discuss a pharmacoeconomic study from the perspectives to different parties:
    a. Provider
    b. Payer
    c. Society
  11. Define epidemiological and statistical terms used in Pharmacoeconomics:
    a. Incidence
    b. Prevalence
    c. Odds ratio
    d. Relative risk
  12. Determine which of two drugs should be placed on a formulary based on a
    pharmacoeconomic analysis.
  13. Using The Medical Outcomes Study SF-36, compare Quality of Life for patients receiving different treatments in a clinical trial.
  14. Discuss the limitations of multivariate analysis use in evaluating outcomes.
  15. Evaluate a pharmacoeconomic study.
  16. Design a pharmacoeconomic study.
