Advanced Therapeutics I
PHAR 5581

Course Description: Clinical pharmacy practice and therapeutics. Requires integration and application of pharmacologic and biopharmaceutical principles to the treatment of specific disease states.

Cr. 5. (5-0).

Prerequisite: Pharmacodynamics II, PHAR 5703

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the following (where applicable) for the topic presented:
    1. pathophysiology as it relates to drug therapy choices.
    2. signs, symptoms, and laboratory findings as responses to drug therapy (therapeutic monitoring parameters).
    3. natural course as it relates to prognosis and response to long term therapeutic measures, goals of therapy.
  2. Discuss the following concerning the treatment of the diseases presented:
    1. drug(s) of choice and rationale for selection.
    2. nonpharmacological treatment and its comparative role with drug therapy.
    3. nature of expected response to treatment including therapeutic monitoring parameters.
    4. adverse effects of treatment.
    5. appropriateness of the treatment regimen.
    6. outcome measures and monitoring strategies.
  3. Identify health promotional issues and treatment strategies for the diseases presented, including cancer screening, self-examinations, support groups, behavioral modification, compliance, and rehabilitation programs.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to counsel patients, concerning the diseases presented, on the:
    1. strategies to prevent the disease or to minimize progression of the disease or its complications.
    2. scope, nature and importance of the therapeutic regimen, the risks and benefits of the treatment plan.
    3. the correct use of medications, duration of therapy, and methods to comply with the regimen.
    4. adverse reactions and drug interactions associated with the therapeutic plan.
    5. desired outcome of the therapeutic plan.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to participate in the drug use decision making process concerning the diseases presented, including:
    1. collecting and evaluating patient data to determine health care options (prescription)
    2. recommending to other health care providers appropriate drug selection and formulation.
    3. establishing therapeutic objectives and monitoring parameters for specific patient populations (e.g. geriatric, pediatric, pregnant or lactating women, immunosuppressed patients).
    4. providing drug therapy educational programs to health care professionals
    5. design evaluations of drug use.
