Advanced Therapeutics I
PHAR 5581
Course Description:
Clinical pharmacy practice and therapeutics. Requires integration
and application of pharmacologic and biopharmaceutical principles
to the treatment of specific disease states.
Cr. 5. (5-0).
Prerequisite:
Pharmacodynamics II, PHAR 5703
Course Proficiencies:
The student will be able to:
- Describe the following (where applicable)
for the topic presented:
- pathophysiology as it relates to drug therapy choices.
- signs, symptoms, and laboratory findings as responses
to drug therapy (therapeutic monitoring parameters).
- natural course as it relates to prognosis and response
to long term therapeutic measures, goals of therapy.
- Discuss the following concerning the treatment
of the diseases presented:
- drug(s) of choice and rationale for selection.
- nonpharmacological treatment and its comparative role
with drug therapy.
- nature of expected response to treatment including therapeutic
monitoring parameters.
- adverse effects of treatment.
- appropriateness of the treatment regimen.
- outcome measures and monitoring strategies.
- Identify health promotional issues and
treatment strategies for the diseases presented, including cancer
screening, self-examinations, support groups, behavioral modification,
compliance, and rehabilitation programs.
- Demonstrate the ability to counsel patients,
concerning the diseases presented, on the:
- strategies to prevent the disease or to minimize progression
of the disease or its complications.
- scope, nature and importance of the therapeutic regimen,
the risks and benefits of the treatment plan.
- the correct use of medications, duration of therapy, and
methods to comply with the regimen.
- adverse reactions and drug interactions associated with
the therapeutic plan.
- desired outcome of the therapeutic plan.
- Demonstrate the ability to participate
in the drug use decision making process concerning the diseases
presented, including:
- collecting and evaluating patient data to determine health
care options (prescription)
- recommending to other health care providers appropriate
drug selection and formulation.
- establishing therapeutic objectives and monitoring parameters
for specific patient populations (e.g. geriatric, pediatric,
pregnant or lactating women, immunosuppressed patients).
- providing drug therapy educational programs to health
care professionals
- design evaluations of drug use.
