Course Description:
Development of counseling skills associated with non-prescription
drug dispensing and drug information retrieval.

Prerequisite:
Pharmacy Practice V (Phar 5274)
Course Proficiencies:
The student will be able to:
- Describe the mechanism of action of the
OTC medications discussed in class.
- List the indications of the OTC medications
discussed in class.
- List the adverse effects of the OTC medications
discussed in class.
- Explain how the durable medical equipment
discussed in class is utilized in a specific disease state.
- Explain the patient populations that will
benefit from an OTC medication or DME product.
- Explain the patient populations that an
OTC medication is contraindicated in.
- Describe drug-drug and drug-disease state
interactions with OTC and prescription medications.
- Explain the monitoring parameters necessary
for each OTC medication and DME product discussed in class.
- Discuss the patient education necessary
for the OTC medications and DME discussed in class.
- Counsel patients on proper use of OTC and
DME discussed in class.
- Explain when referral for medical services
is necessary.
- Discuss OTCs in geriatric patients.
- Discuss antioxidants in heart patients.
- Discuss OTCs in children.
- Explain the difference between Homeopathy
and herbal medication.
- Explain DSHEA and how it relates to herbal
medicines.
- Discuss the use of evidence based herbals
discussed in class.
