PHAR 5275

Course Description: Development of counseling skills associated with non-prescription drug dispensing and drug information retrieval.

Cr. 2. (2-0).

Prerequisite: Pharmacy Practice V (Phar 5274)

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the mechanism of action of the OTC medications discussed in class.
  2. List the indications of the OTC medications discussed in class.
  3. List the adverse effects of the OTC medications discussed in class.
  4. Explain how the durable medical equipment discussed in class is utilized in a specific disease state.
  5. Explain the patient populations that will benefit from an OTC medication or DME product.
  6. Explain the patient populations that an OTC medication is contraindicated in.
  7. Describe drug-drug and drug-disease state interactions with OTC and prescription medications.
  8. Explain the monitoring parameters necessary for each OTC medication and DME product discussed in class.
  9. Discuss the patient education necessary for the OTC medications and DME discussed in class.
  10. Counsel patients on proper use of OTC and DME discussed in class.
  11. Explain when referral for medical services is necessary.
  12. Discuss OTCs in geriatric patients.
  13. Discuss antioxidants in heart patients.
  14. Discuss OTCs in children.
  15. Explain the difference between Homeopathy and herbal medication.
  16. Explain DSHEA and how it relates to herbal medicines.
  17. Discuss the use of evidence based herbals discussed in class.
