Course Description: Knowledge, description, and counseling information concerning durable medical supplies, diagnostic agents, nutritional supplements, and sterile products.

Cr. 2. (2-0).

Prerequisite: Pharmacy Practice IV (Phar 5373)
Co-requisite: Advanced Therapeutics I (Phar 5581)

Course Proficiencies: The student will be able to:

  1. List the indications of the OTC medications discussed in class.
    1. Nutritional supplements
    2. Vitamin and Mineral supplements
    3. Smoking cessation products
    4. Weight control products
    5. Antifungals
    6. Cough/Cold/Allergy products
    7. Wound care and topical anti-infective products
    8. Antidiarreals
    9. Hemorroidal preparations
    10. Antacids/H2 antagonists
    11. Antiemetics
    12. Foot products
    13. Incontinence products
    14. Internal analgesics/antipyretics
    15. Insulin
    16. Topical anesthetics
    17. Menstrual products
  2. List the adverse effects of the OTC medications discussed in class.
  3. Explain how the durable medical equipment discussed in class is utilized in a specific disease state.
    1. Smoking cessation
    2. Immunizations
    3. First aid products and bandages
    4. Ostomy products
    5. Foot products
    6. Catheters
    7. Diabetic products and supplies
  4. List the characteristics of the patient populations that will benefit from an OTC medication or DME product.
  5. List the characteristics of the patient populations that an OTC medication is contraindicated in.
  6. Describe potential drug-drug interactions between OTC and prescription medications and drug-disease state interactions with OTC medications.
  7. Describe the monitoring parameters necessary for each OTC medication and DME product discussed in class.
  8. Describe specific patient education that is necessary for the OTC medications and DME discussed in class.
  9. Discuss the role of protocols in immunization.
  10. Discuss injection sites and differences for IM and SC immunization.
  11. Demonstrate the difference between various glucometers.
  12. Discuss the difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis and counseling techniques for these patients.
